Guy Kawasaki: New Mini-Media Mogul? - Red Herring
Guy Kawasaki, Apple’s former mega-evangelist and well-known Silicon Valley entrepreneur, announced on Tuesday the launch of his second media startup, Alltop, at the music and geek gathering in Austin, Texas, known as South by Southwest.
The debut of the Alltop news and blog aggregation site comes a year after Mr. Kawasaki’s launch of Truemors.com, which allows people to submit news or rumors, at which point users can rank the items.
The launch of two alternative online media companies within a year could suggest Mr. Kawasaki is parting ways with his role as managing director of Garage Technology Ventures and moving toward heading up an alternative media network.
“Seen from the outside you could conclude that, but that would be false,” Mr. Kawasaki said, “I am a partner at Garage, but I’m trying to take a more entrepreneur and research role to do things like Alltop.”
The concept of the site is simple. It offers an aggregation of 40 of what it considers the most popular topics, such as celebrities, sports, fashion, Mac, and the controversial category–egos.
Headlines and first paragraphs of the five most recent stories from 40 to 80 sources of blogs and web sites for each topic are displayed. Alltop stories are refreshed roughly every 10 minutes.
