Berlin’s Talent Campus now in fifth year
Variety
Ten years ago, the talk was all about markets: Every film festival had to have one or risk looking like a glorified county fair. Before that, it was about competitive sections — a gold rush that yielded such accolades as the Golden Starfish (the Hamptons), the Golden Apricot (Yerevan) and the Golden Aphrodite (the, er, Love Is Folly Film Fest, in Bulgaria).
This season, the must-have accessory for any self-respecting fest is a talent campus — and looking around, it seems like every A-list film fest is hitting the lecture circuit. Toronto has its Talent Lab, which boasts master classes from visiting Hollywood royalty. So does Pusan, whose Asian Film Academy was launched in 2005 — the same year that Cannes extended its Cinefondation to include its Atelier for young filmmakers. And then, of course, there’s Berlin — which arguably started it all.
