AFI celebrated this year’s 123 AFI Conservatory graduates — and the world’s newest filmmakers — Monday, June 11, at Hollywood’s historic TCL Chinese Theatre. During Commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2018, Doctorate of Fine Arts degrees honoris causa were conferred upon Academy Award®-winning actor/director Jodie Foster and Academy Award®-winning production designer Dean Tavoularis for their “contribution of distinction to the art of the moving image.”
Tucked away in an unsuspecting room in Kathikhera, a rural village in Northern India, steel frames and wooden crates filled with supplies crowd the space. Laura Green and Anna Moot-Levin’s THE PROVIDERS follows three “country doctors” — health care providers working for a small network of clinics in northern New Mexico — as they confront the challenges of keeping those in their poor and opioid-plagued communities healthy and safe.
AFI has announced the inaugural AFI Cinematography Introductory Intensive for Women (CIIW), sponsored by 21st Century Fox. The tuition-free program, taking place on the AFI campus in Los Angeles, August 3-6, 2018, will introduce the fundamentals of visual storytelling to women who are interested in a career in cinematography. In addition, Twentieth Century Fox Film and AFI will partner to launch the Fox DP Lab for recently graduated female cinematographers from the AFI Conservatory.
