On October 10, AFI President Emerita Jean Picker Firstenberg will release her book “Becoming AFI: 50 Years Inside the American Film Institute,” co-authored by former longtime COO of AFI James Hindman.
Written in a unique memoir style, “Becoming AFI” offers a candid look at how AFI has brought together aspiring filmmakers, outstanding educators and visionary artists. The book details AFI’s journey to becoming a national champion for moving images as a vibrant art form and a critical component of America’s cultural history.
AFI’s story is chronicled through in-depth essays written by those who have been involved in its adventures, growth and successes: from its early years under George Stevens, Jr.’s direction at the legendary Greystone mansion and the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC; through its period of growth under Jean Picker Firstenberg’s guidance at its Hollywood campus; to its continued years under current President and CEO Bob Gazzale’s leadership.
Firstenberg will also be touring with the book in discussions across the country, including as part of Writer’s Bloc in LA with moderator Michael Nesmith, who served as a Trustee at AFI for 12 years. Tickets are available here, and the event will also include a book signing with Firstenberg. See a full list of upcoming events below.
The book is currently available for pre-order on Amazon here.
