A.J. Rickert-Epstein: Video Production Coordinator

ajfestpic.jpg Your job title is Video Production Coordinator — but who are you really?
I am a filmmaker/cinematographer/editor who is helping out with AFI FEST in order to improve and streamline their video department.

Job titles aren’t very descriptive, and the festival would obviously fall apart without you. What do you really do around here?
I do everything video-related including uploading trailers to Youtube, Metacafe and Myspace to shooting Red Carpets, to editing footage, to creating TV loops for the plasmas, to field producing for the volunteer camera teams. I also organize the volunteers for our department and pair them up for the gigs we send them out on – which means I also schedule those gigs, along with my partner in crime, Dave Craig, who does all of the above as well.  Mainly, though, I write things on Post-It notes and put them all over my computer.

Why do you work for AFI FEST?
What, aside from the obviously amazing opportunity to work closely with a great group of people and for such a well-known and respected festival?  Honestly, I am working for AFI because I am tired!  I was director of photography on five feature films this year as well as editing two other feature films and after all of that insanity, I figured I could use a break…  (Yes, all the stuff I do in the job description above is something I consider a break!  Essentially, at AFI I can sleep for about eight hours a night…a personal record for the year.  That enough is a good reason.)

What’s your favorite thing about the Festival?
Well, there are the Post-It notes…but I really like the people I work with.  They all do a great job and are fun to be around.  I also like getting to upload to Youtube and Metacafe, because I inevitably watch a funny video or two while each trailer or clip is processing.

What’s one movie you’re really looking forward to?
DEFIANCE looks awesome.  I have been a Daniel Craig fan since Layer Cake – one of my all time favorite films.

After this is all over, what’s the first thing you’re going to do?
I am going to finish editing Operation Repo: The Movie and then go home to Ohio for a month and write my next feature film!

The video production coordinators are often overlooked for all the hard work that they do. I think it is great that you are getting recognized for all of your hard work!
