On November 16th, AFI Conservatory Artistic Director James L. Brooks hosted the entire class of current second-year Screenwriting Fellows, and their Discipline Head Anna Thomas, for a unique opportunity on the Fox lot.
The AFI Conservatory’s talented group of Screenwriters sat with THE SIMPSONS executive producer Brooks, and the producers and the writing staff of the show, as they listened to a cast table read of the first draft of a new episode — gaining up-close insight into the making of a television series. After the reading, Fellows received revised drafts, providing a fast track into the evolution of a script, and the excitement of the rewrite process.
This intimate, behind-the-scenes writers’ room visit is part of the AFI Conservatory’s dynamic approach to learning by doing — that Fellows experience firsthand the art and craft of filmmaking. Fellows also learn from masters of the art form visiting on campus. Recent screenwriters who’ve come to the AFI Campus for Harold Lloyd Master Seminars to discuss their work with Fellows include George Clooney and Grant Heslov (SUBURBICON), Sofia Coppola (THE BEGUILED), Dan Gilroy (ROMAN J. ISRAEL, ESQ.) and Sean Baker (THE FLORIDA PROJECT).
