War

OK, I don’t think there is a greatest movie of all time or 100 greatest movies of all time because a big part of that is opionion. But here are a few movies I love:

West Side Story-An incredible story of gang warfare and true love set in 1950’s New York City. This movie said so much about racism and was truely groudbreaking. It really can be called the greatest musical of all time.

Schindler’s List-The list is and absolute good. The list is life. This is the brutal tale of the holocost and how one man risked everything to do the right thing. This movie inspired me more than any other. At the end when the Jews lay rocks on Schindler’s grave in the form of a cross I just get goosebumps.

On the Waterfront-Directors today need to see this movie to know that you don’t have to put swearing and violence in a movie to make people understand the mafia. A great work of art about a thug who has a concience and risks his life to do the right thing. One of the most triumphant moments in the cinema is when Terry Malloy yells, “I’m glad what I done to you!” to Johnny Friendly.

E.T.-By far the most inspiring Sci Fi movie of all time. E.T. touches my heart.

Doctor Zhivago-It’s an absolute outrage that this masterpiece didn’t make the list. A timeless love story about a man who’s heart is torn between two women. An epic masterpiece.

Rebel Without a Cause-A movie that kids everywhere can relate to. One of the first movies that doesn’t make teenage kids the “bad guys” James Dean, Sal Mineo, and Natalie Wood give incredible performances. Quite possibly the greatest ensamble cast of all time. I just love this movie because I can really relate with it.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington-An incredible triumphant and inspiring movie.

It’s a Wonderful Life-This is the reason we watch movies!

Saving Private Ryan-No one but Spielberg could have made such and inspiring movie about WWII. Epic and incredible. Tom Hanks is our finest living actor.

Lawrence of Arabia-Epic all over! A tremendously beautiful movie. Peter O’ Toole is the only person that could pull off T. E. Lawrence like that. This movie might be the climax of American Cinema. Incredible for it’s time and ours.

Apollo 13-Inspirational!

Love Story-Heart Breaking

by Jordan Nichols

History has always been my favorite subject, and World War II in particular has been a favorite subject of my studies. I love this film because of those interests, but also because it aptly showcases the fact that there were people even within the Third Reich who were horrified by the events of the holocaust and tried to do something about it. Even though Oskar Schindler was driven to do the things he did by his desire to turn a profit, at least initially, in the end he was tortured by the fact that he could have saved so many more people with the money he had made. It is this kind of compassion in the midst of the monstrosity that was WWII and the holocaust that makes this movie ultimately touching.

The madness of mankind

The most stirring, emotional, and real portrayal of the Second World War that I have ever seen.

Great love story Also the movie has a little bit of everything in it

How can this not be in the Top 100, and Toy Story and the horribly overated Titanic be on it, give me a break!

GWTW is the model for every epic, romance or human condition flim. The spectacle, acting, music and pure movie magic have never been surpassed.

Mag.7 has human interaction, pathos, good acting, fantastic music and scenery. More than a western - a great movie experience.

Zulu is a spectacular presentation of the human spirit. Great photography and music wrap the good acting and inspiring story in a mesmerizing event. With all the world attacking english/american values, this film is a shot in the arm for our image.

We were soldiers, saving private ryan, walk in the sun, thin red line, apocolypse now and black hawk down

Outperforms all vietnam era movies as you are actually travelling along with Martin Sheen on his “Assignment”. You visually experience vietnam
firsthand and become mesmerized and feel as if you are the one going down the river. I have watched this movie once per year for past 5 or 6 years and find something new and different each time. Should have won for best picture, but we cant have everything. Redux version adds even more detail, like 45 more minutes. Even though Brando has a minimal role, he still steals the show with his presence. For those who have never seen Martin Sheen in action, this role couldnt have been played by anyone else which is a great compliment to him.

Not in the top 100? You must be kidding. The court martial scene alone makes it a better movie than at least half of the dogs in the top 100. The Caine Mutiny belongs in the top ten. What performance in any of the the top 100 can beat Bogart’s portrayal of Captain Queeg cracking on the witness stand? Only perhaps Bogart in another movie.

Bogart’s portrayal of the embattled ship’s captain on the stand is a tour de force. The cast is exceptional: Fred MacMurray, Jose Ferrer, and Van Johnson. In my view, Van Johnson was the audience: naive, too easily led, and yet feeling good about his choice. When Boagrt portray’s Captauin Queeg’s meltdown on the stand, Van Johnson seems to be proven correct. We all are. But Ferrer shows us how wrong we all can be. I have never seen Fred MacMurray in a better role.

Once has been possible that cinema make a film which is better than a classic book

Great CBS show and movie selection last night except you forgot those 2 great movies : Amadeus (best classical music movie) and Patton (second best WWII movie) this time around…

Script, cinematography, score, sound effects, visual effects, casting, acting, star power - great in every aspect of what makes a great film. The most complete movie ever made.

How could anyone come up with one favorite movie. I more than the above to go a top of the heap list. I love movies for many reasons. The Pianist is a emotionally powerful work with one of the great acting performances of all time.

American Beauty is funny, hypnotic, lyrical, beautifully photagraphed, great writing, acting………. Great Story telling. Hip.

Godfather I & II all of the above and insightful.

Bulworth: I movie I never tire of watching. It is hillarious……..

Thunder Road….. Robert Mitchum

The Hustler……. Again great cinematography, acting.
Solyaris: But if I had to pick my greatest movie it would probably be Solyaris. A beautiful film that is the most affective film I’ve seen that paints a picture of transcendence and creation.

Just one comment about a movie lot’s of people love and I send to the bottom of my list. Namely 12 Angry Men. Thought this movie was God awful. It does not put you in the room in the sense that you could make a decision on the fate of the person being judged. The evidence used to walk you to this jury’s conclusion was non-existent.

To me, a great movie must mesmerize an audience. When I saw this movie, it was the only time I’ve ever experience complete silence in a movie theater. A full theater with about 500-600 people (yes, the old days of big screens) and no one said a word. This film kept you fixated on the screen. You couldn’t keep your eyes off the action, and when Marlo Brando appears, you just are taken to another place. Creepy, challenging, entertaining, this one did it all.

I guess a 95:1 shooting ratio does pay off, simply the most stunning film achievement of all time. Perfectly paced and completely devastating.

my favorite movies are pulp fiction, shawshank redemption and full metal jacket

Not a conventional movie in the classic sense yet not a full on drama. It is a movie that plunges a viewer deep into the psychological depths of warfare and insanity in a plethora of color/sound and impressive cinematography. The beginning of this movie is completely discernible from the end and makes us feel like we have truly gone on a journey. The way that the encounter between Kurtz and Willard is set up is reminiscent of A Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad (the original work on which the movie is based.) The characters are so real and well crafted, whether it be from Duvalle as Kilgore or Brando as Kurtz, we can see flawless directing at its best. Both the beginning scene with the “ghost helicopter” and the beautifully presented version of the “End Song” by The Doors, and the end scene also with music by The Doors; Serve to set the tone for a movie that truly throws us into the depths of the Apocalypse both physically and emtionally. A true modern masterpiece that cannot be categorized into one genre Apocalypse Now shows us Coppolla at his best (apart from The Godfather.)

SHINDLER'S LIST

The most affecting film of all time. A story that not only makes you cry for memory, but cry for hope. A beautifully directed masterpiece.

Being Jewish, Schindler’s List is the single greatest film about the Holocaust ever made. To me it is more than just a movie, it is a lasting memorial for those who died in the Holocaust. Not only do i find this films story to be extremly movie, i find it visually beautiful. Every shot is a work of art. A film that will live on for the rest of mankind. A masterpiece.

A British officer held in a Japanese prison camp during WWII is put in charge of a project to build a bridge linking Japanese supply lines across Burma while an American sailor who escaped from the same camp leads a demolition team to blow up the bridge.

It’s pure David Lean storytelling at it’s best. The film shows man’s heroism, courage, and determination but, ultimately, it depicts the utter futility of war.

A troubled American Captain travels into the remote jungles of Vietnam to kill a American Colonel who has gone AWOL.

This movie although disturbing at first, is a masterpiece of American cinema! Robert Duvall’s “I love the smell of napalm in the morning” remains one of the best movie quotes ever. I could watch this over and over and never get bored.

Because is the first masterpiece in world’s history that doesn’t depends of historical value…like:

first movie: Lumiere’s
first fiction movie: Melies’
first movie with edition: Griffith

All these moviemakers have a mark on themselves, they’re from the past and when you look at one of his movies you see that, when you watch the Eisenstein picture you understand that is much more than a story, cinema is about feelings, emotions, and Potemkin keeps giving us this satisfaction

This movie made me cry. It was so inspirational. This made Spielberg the greatest director.

I think this movie shows one man giving up everything for nothing in return. It inspires us that we can do amazing things when we put our mind to it.

Best Movie Ever!

The Diary of Anne Frank is one of my favorite movies because it has many essential film elements. It is based on a true story, it has suspense, humor, romance, and it shows the problems everyone faces at every point in there lives whether it is adolescent angst or adult disagreements. I love the way Millie Perkins portrays Anne’s naivety and optimism. She believes they will make it out of hiding and even though you know the end before hand, she still makes you hope for the best. I absolutely adore Millie Perkins in this film and think that the rest of the cast does a superb job of representing the people Anne Frank describes in her diary. Every time I watch this movie, it brings tears to my eyes. It’s brilliant!

Starring Jack Webb and Directed by Jack Webb. If you are a current or former Marine you’ll know why this movie is the greatest. This movie captures the essence of Marine Corps boot camp. While “Full Metal Jacket” captured the reality of Marine Corps boot camp, “The D. I.” made you want to join….I know I did.

Tora,Tora,Tora, Blast From The Past, Color Purple, Guadalcanal Diary, Objective Burma, Merrills Marauders, Das Boot, The Bridge.

To many greats to choose from both past and present.

This movie depicts some of what happened to me during World War II.
It portrays life in the Anti Aircraft Artillery Officer Candidate School at Camp Davis, NC during 1943.
I graduated as a 2nd Lt on 21 January 1943 from this very same school. I was 21 years of age at that time.

Would love to see it or get a copy of it.

OCS was pretty tough and I’d like to share it with friends and family.

Thanks much
