Where is THE QUIET MAN? This is one of the most beautifully visual films of the last 50 years. Shot on location in the West of Ireland it encapsulates the country’s beauty and sense of tradition, as well at tells a great love story. The performances by John Wayne, as Sean Thornton, and Maureen O’Hara, as Mary Kate Danagher, are some of their best work. This film was near and dear to director, John Ford’s heart and it shows. This film never gets old and one I have seen about a hundred times.

THE QUIET MAN is on my short list of favorite movies essentially because of the presence of Maureen O’Hara in one of the leading roles.
She personifies charm, style and grace. The plot and location of the movie should attract “movie watchers” of Irish-American heritage.

I love the color and the scenery. I have always been a big John Wayne fan. This is not his typical type of film. The charectors are all unique.
Maureen O’Hara is beutiful and the story is fun.

This movie is John Ford’s masterpiece with his favorite team of actors.
Sean Thornton, John Wayne, flees his pain from having killed another boxer, and returns to his native Ireland. But he can’t get away. The romance between Sean and Mary Kate, Maureen O’hara, is classic for the two. Love and conflict. The fight scene between Sean and Mary Kate’s brother, Victor McLaughlin, with no deaths or blood, is one of the best in films.

This John Ford masterpiece is set in Ireland with all its beauty and grandeur. Maureen O’Hara and John Wayne portray two people from entirely different worlds who discover that what they need in life, the other one has to give. Barry Fitzgerald, as usual, adds a delightul touch that helps round out this remarkable film.

The Quiet Man has been on AFI’s top 10 before; I am surprised to not see it this year.

Loved the humor, the music, the scenery, the clash of cultures. Try to watch it every St Patrick’s Day.

This may not be my very favorite movie, but I did expect to see it on the list–or at least another of John Ford’s movies.
I also missed DR ZHIVAGO and THE STING.

You put crap like Nashville on the list…and TOY STORY? and leave the quisential John Wayne/John Ford movie off the list…with the fight scene at the end even better than anything in Rocky AND Raging Bull c’mon
Thu 21 Jun 2007
It tells a good story without any fancy special effects.

I am a great John Wayne fan and was disappointed that QUIET MAN did not make the list. Also thought that RED RIVER was better than THE SEARCHERS for another John Wayne Movie.
I think that the build up to and the fight scene is one of the best in the movies.

each actor seems perfect for the part. even the lesser roles. as most of them (the main characters) have apperaed together in other John Ford movies, their rapport is evident andenhances the film.

As grand as the Searcher’s is, my favorite John Ford-John Wayne film remains The Quiet Man. Wayne and Maureen O’Hara’s kiss when he sweeps her off her feet is the best smooch in film history and the fight between Wayne and Victor McLaglen is one of the most entertaining brawls committed to film.

This is a great story. A fine cast, and many memorable moments. Impetuous!

John Wayne’s best movie ever. It had it all. Love, comedy, the outsider trying to fit in and come home to the dream of belonging. And finally the hero gets the girls, as he should.

This film, after a hard stressful day, is the way to relax. Wayne and Ford made good westerns together but this film, with the quality supporting cast, was their crowning glory.

John Ford’s film about a boxer returning to Ireland after accidentally killing a man in the ring.
This film combines sentimentality, humour and beautiful rural Irish scenary. It has great performances from Wayne, O’Hara, Fitzgerald and McGlauglin that can’t be beat. The photography is beautiful, and it has a wonderful score by Victor Young. Considering, that this film was released by Republic Pictures, a remarkable achievement.

Let’s ponder the meaning of life and who really is a slave. Replicants have a short lifespan yet yearn for a longer existance.
Rutger’s whole part, remember his saying “Time to die”, come on. the boy should have won the Academy Award for his performance. That is the best death scene on film.
