THE PHILADELPHIA STORY

Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart…what more could you ask for??

I love this movies because the story is a delight, the dialogue cracks, the acting is divine and the costumes, sets, direction, are all so perfect…a real gem. Maybe, it was the first movie where I realized that all those many years ago, people knew about the same things we knew about in our current times. (I was very young when I first caught it on late night tv movies.) I realized the timelessness of the movies.

You probably won’t find 4more disparate choices, but each one holds a place in my heart. Philadelphia Story is witty, charming, and above all, a funny story- Katharine Hepburn at her best. Young Frank-What can I say? Probably the most quotable comedy every. Mockingbird was my favorite book as a teen, and Atticus is the father we all dreamed of. LOTR continues to amaze me as a piece of epic filmmaking, with the emotions of the story never overwhelmed by special effects.

Absolutely the definition of witty dialogue and smooth acting. Plus a great romantic ending!

I love The Philadelphia Story because it has all the ingredients of a perfect film. The screenplay sparkles, the leads are perfect, and the supporting players do exactly that–support. The movie is definitely old fashioned in its attitudes toward women (that may be putting it very mildly), but I am fully aware of that and don’t at all care. Katharine Hepburn is heartbreaking and hysterical as Tracy Lord. And, the two male leads–Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart–are exacting foils for her and for one another.

The best classic stars giving forth with the wittiest, snappiest diaglogue at a perfect pace. This movie allows the viewer to enter into the private lives of the privileged rich of yesteryear, and to enjoy the beautiful sets. James Stewart’s character is marvelous with his cynicism that is mirrored with his humanity. Kate Hepburn is at her very best in my opinion, and of course Cary Grant is perfect. The supporting players are excellent and all in all, it’s a flawless film that is my favorite.

The archetype of sophisticated comedy. Brilliant script: comedy with a dramatic theme. Top-drawer cast. Cukor direction. A high point for Katharine Hepburn.

It makes me forget all my troubles…

Everytime I’m in a bad mood or just feeling lonely I put that movie in the DVD player and watch it. It makes me forget all my troubles and even though I think I know everything about the movie, I always catch a quote that I missed and I love that.

This movie never ceases to make me laugh…

This is my favorite performance of Katharine Hepburn’s. This movie never ceases to make me laugh, no matter how many times I’ve already watched it.
