THE LION IN WINTER

The writing is magnificent; easily the best dialog in any movie but the performances by Peter O’Toole and Katherine Hepburn are the best of their careers. In this movie we also witness the coming greatness of Anthony Hopkins. He is so nasty and wonderful all at the same time, it brings gooseflesh. I don’t know if “Kate” could have played this part at a younger age. She always had CHOPS but life experience led her to play it so strongly. Peter is probably the best actor ever, I think he is.I also like the fact that nothing is resolved. Things are not resolved in life, but all too often they tie them up with a pretty bow in movies at the end. It doesn’t work that way. Use this movie as the #1 teaching movie. susieh

Perhaps the best screenplay of all time, with fabulous one liners and dialogue. I may not be quoting perfectly, but as examples, based on my recollection: Prince John moans — “Poor Prince John. If I were on fire, not a man in the kingdom would piss on me to put out the flames” and his brother chimes in quickly “I would.” Katherine Hepburn as the Queen plotting a coup says to her estranged husband — “Did you ever love me?” and when he says “No. Never”, her response is “Good, that will make this easier.” Katherine Hepburn describing the woman who stole her king — “She had perfectly even teeth. She smiled to excess, but she chewed with rare distinction.”
