The Hustler is a great movie driven by dialogue and acting, almost like a filmed play. The characters are all well developed. While pool is a central theme to the film, it is not a movie about pool. It is a movie about flawed characters, with a focus on their flaws. A dark movie, which is enhanced by excellent cinemetography in black and white. No happy Hollywood ending here. Paul Newman and George C. Scott give their best performances. Jackie Gleason, Piper Laurie and Myron McCormick are perfectly cast. My favorite scene is during the first pool match when Minnesota Fats (Gleason) gets cleaned up.
