THE GRAUDATE

If ever a perfect film was made, this is it. I was disappointed to see that it had moved down 10 spots on the AFI 100 Years…100 Movies-10th Anniversary Edition, because I think it deserves a place in the top 10 (if it was left up to me, the top 5–and I have seen the majority of the films on the list). Nichols is obviously an outstanding director, and Hoffman and Bancroft are impeccable in their acting, as is Katharine Ross. The cinematography was revolutionary at that time, and still holds up today. But this film goes beyond the surface: it is the plea of a young man who wants to do something different with his life. He wants to avoid the “plastics” of the world; he feels that his life has been wasted and wants to do something about it. So begins the relationship between Ben and Mrs. Robinson. The musical soundtrack of haunting songs by Simon and Garfunkel is perfectly suited to this film, though only one of the songs was actually composed for it (”Mrs. Robinson”). This made the soundtrack also revolutionary; it was not the custom at the time to use previously-recorded music in films, something which is quite commonplace today. This movie was underappreciated when it came out, losing the Oscar to “In the Heat of the Night” and is still, in my opinion, underappreciated today. It is a true masterpiece and one of the best films in all of American cinema.

The acting, writing, directing, soundtrack and all of that is amazing, but that is the case with a lot of films. What makes The Graduate so good is that there is nothing wrong with it. There is not one thing that if it were made again, could be changed to make it better. It is one of the few films that works both as a time piece and a universal film that transcends time period. It’s beautiful, funny, tragic, and absolutely amazing.

Good story, good direction, good photogrphy, good acting, very funny.
My genre favorites are:

Best war movie: FULL METAL JACKET
Best western: THE UNFORGIVEN
Best sci-fi movie: 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY
Best comedy: THE GENERAL
Best scary movie: WAIT UNTIL DARK

‘The Graduate’ is a light movie that talks about serious things. It’s very easy like Benjamim because he becames a noble character, someone admirable because his humanity. He lost his innocence, commits some mistakes, changes his life and fights for his happiness.

I wouldn’t say The Graduate is the greatest film ever made but it is the closest to my heart. I think the greatest movie is Casablanca.

came around at a time in my life that it made a huge impression, and it has not changed much. longevity. great acting and emotional. the songs are perfect.
there are many other all-time great films close to it, but if i had to pick one, i’d pick this one, cause i’m a romantic at heart, and how can you not fall in love with Elaine! Elaine!

I love this film! It gets everything right! Great acting, writing, directing, cinematography, and editing! A true classic. Bancroft and Hoffman are brilliant. They were both right when they said that the film is neither a drama or a comedy. It is simply about life.

I SAW IT 3 DAYS IN A ROW WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE AND ENJOYED IT MORE AND MORE. TODAY 40 YEARS LATER I STILL LOVE WATCHING IT.

That a woman could be the pursuer was new to many of us. Good writing & good acting.

Classic Film, and still underrated.

Every year when I was young, one of the networks would show a movie that children everywhere waited patiently to watch. They even dreamed of it. I was not one of them. There was another movie on a different channel that would air every June. That was the movie I waited patiently to watch. That I dreamed of. That movie was The Graduate. I was obsessed with its timeless tale of generational division and sexual awakening, and I still am. Unforgettable characters, great writing, precision editing and a much deserved Oscar awarded to a director who proved that all the special effects in the world cannot top a gifted eye behind the camera. I am proud to call this my favorite film.

Honestly this movie made me obsessed with movies; I have seen it at least 100 times and it gets better and sadder each time.

A profoundly moving story about being dully anti-establishment and then running into the very thing that your parents wished for all along and fading off into the sterilized suburban wasteland after all. brilliant!

THE GRADUATE is one of the movies that opened up my eyes to the power of filmmaking. Dustin Hoffman (my favorite actor) and Anne Bancroft gave amazing performances in the film. Director Mike Nichols shots are so experimental and a perfect representation of Benjamin Braddock’s crossroads as a character. Simon and Garfunkel’s score also fits the mood with such songs as The Sound of Silence and the classic Mrs. Robinson.

EL GRADUADO

Te lo digo en español… Es simplemente la mejor pelicula de todos los tiempos!!!

El Graduado de Mike Nichols es la mejor pelicula de todos los tiempos.

Benjamin has graduated.

One of the most influential films of all time, particularly in the contemporary American independent boom, Mike Nichols’ film works as a killer comedy, a moving drama, and a harrowing tragedy with one of the most open-ended and dismally happy endings of all time. Everything works.
