THE GODFATHER

where do i begin? brando’s classic raspy whisper. coppola’s legendary set pieces such as the wedding. and the most impressive thing is that it makes us feel the sense of family and life through a mafia family, which is unique and interesting. al pacino gets my vote as the best performance. his transition is classic and tragiv into a ruthless crime boss for the family. best movie ever

I first saw this movie in Cuba in the late 1970’s. I must say I have not stopped seen it ever since. I believe all and all I have seen this movie maybe 50 times. I just don’t get tired of watching it. Marlon Brando’s performance as well as Al Pacino’s will be remembered for ever! And not only that. Just consider that at least 6 different actors in the original cast would ultimately win an Oscar for their acting over the years in other movies. I am afraid Hollywood will never be able to summon in one movie such a superstar cast comparable to THE GODFATHER. PART I. It is one of the greatest artistic masterpieces of the 20th Century, and probably the grandest movie of all times!

It’s a Male thing, I think!
All round great movie - the pacing, the characters and great script.

enough said.

Simply perfect in all aspects

Three hours of gripping suspense — make him an offer he can’t refuse!

This movie introduced the the idea that family values trump any and all other social hierachies, including government itself. The viewer is led down this road through the conversion of Michael Corleone himself to the virtue of family first. Every supporting character is powerful, every suspenseful moment hair raising. By far, it is the greatest “moral” tale of our time.

The Godfather is the best movie EVER. The way that Michael Corleone never intends to help the “family business” but ends up realizing after he has an opportunity to help out, that he is involved for good, and from then on becomes as involved as his father (The Godfather). The family is not bad, as long as people respect them and don’t stand in their way. The setting of the Godfather films: from Sicily, Italy, to New York, to Las Vegas, pre-Revolution Cuba, Hollywood, and more, really make the viewer feel they are in that time and place. I continue to seek gangster films better that the Godfather…but NOTHING compares!!! This is the best movie in American Film History.

I think this movie is a masterpiece even now I have never see some movie as good as THE GODFATHER

screenplay is extraordinary, nino rota’s music is something great and marlon brando’s performance is something like 18year old scotch and al pacino has gave life to michael.beautiful direction by coppola, showing us about the real side of italian mafia’s family and business.

For one simple fact when scrolling through the TV listings I always stop and watch the Godfather, Ive seen it over 30 times, read the book, watched the documentaries on it. Memorized much of the script. It has a great cast, great direction, and a story that even those who dislike the Mafia, adore this movie because of what else it represents. Many individual great performances perhaps never to be topped. Seeing it is #2 on your recent list it is agreed upon by many millions I’d guess

There’s nothing to criticize about this masterpiece. Everything works: the writing, the direction, the cinematography, and most of all the cast and the story. It’s sequel is almost as good as this and is certainly worthy of mention on any top 20 list of great movies.

Even more impressive, The Godfather was shot on a shoestring budget with few special effects. This movie proves that a big picture doesn’t need a big budget.

I absolutely love the godfather! the story is so complex it takes multiple watchings and even then you catch things you hadn’t noticed or caught onto before. the music is great, the acting everything about it. There are so many wonderful actors and actresses in it who werent really famous when the movie came out. I’m so glad it moved from spot 3 to 2!

Sure this was perhaps Pacinos defining role and sure it was by any standards a classic movie but to put this offering in such an illustrious position is to overstate I believe just what the material was in this offering. Firstly it completely fictionalised the notion that the Mafia are really just family lovin misunderstood victims with a strict moral code etc etc. when in fact the reality is somewhat different. It is somewhat akin to the Camelot bull…. that surrounded the Kennedy era we love to kid ourselves that what is illusion is somehow real. When did Pacino or for that matter Brando give us anything below par in their respective careers. THis was just another vehicle for them well done I give you but not in the master class I believe.

It’s perfect! =D

Simply the best……….Francis & the boy’s are unique’s, the story, the adaptation, the proceedings are the best.
Al Pacino, Marlon Brandon, Bob Duvall and all are great.

¡Thanks Francis!

Perfect screenplay. Brando, Pacino, Coppola at their best. Michael Corleone’s journey to the dark side is the most extraordinary story ever told by Hollywood. Crime does pay.

All Good.Tarrance.

BOTH HAVE THE GREATEST STORYLINES I HAVE EVER SEEN THE FILMS ARE MADE SO PERFECT THEY BOTH ALSO HAVE MY FAVORITE ACTOR WHICH IS AL PACINO AND THE GODFATHER HAS MARLON BRANDO ONE OF MY OTHER FAVORITE ACTORS THEY BOTH ARE VERY IMPACTING AND ARE SO EXCELLENT I BELIEVE SCARFACE SHOULD BE ON THE 100 GREATEST MOVIES LIST ITS A TRUE CLASSIC BUT I LOVE THE GODFATHER AND SCARFACE EQUALLY THEYRE BOTH THE BEST

i know i have alot of support for this film as many people i know chose it as their faviorte. for me its the sweeping landscape of italy and story inside the story. as i catch it on tv time to time i still cant take my eyes off of this movie as something new pops up everytime i watch it. the growth of michael from a discharged marine to the don is a tranformation that few movies have with such drama. brando at his best! sonny probely wished they had ezpass back in the forties! or he would still be around. you learn to real fast fredo not going to last long. i could go on and on. very true to mario puzio’s book, something that is rare in film that the book and the movie are equally great. george j.

it gets my vote also. when it first came out, i was married to an italian, who actually wanted to be in the “mob”. god. good thing we live in texas and not new york or it would probably have happened. i just love the movie. i like all the actors and the idea of coming to america, a place that was to be a new beginning for all the immigrants. many of the italian customs bring back precious memories to me of my beloved extended italian family. even though i am no longer in that family, i still love this movie and watch it every time it is on tv!

this has been my all time favorite. the story was great, the characters were brilliant. it’s such a compelling movie about power, loyalty, and most importantly, family. and i sooo love al pacino

A movie that operates on so many levels and succeeds, from the story to the acting to the set design, the music. It has it all.

I consider these films as one film.
Reason it’s my number one?
It will be easier to give you the reasons why it shouldn’t be my number one: there are none.

Brilliant

Where is Gladiator? Are you people total idiots?

the athmosphere is great. my neckhair is standing up when I watch this movie.

The Godfather is THE American epic film of the late 20th century. The gangster movie, after all, is one of a handful of distinctly American genres (along with the Western and film noir). Moreover, the movie powerfully dramatizes the cynicism of Vietnam-era America, as the power wielded brutally by the Corleone family is juxtaposed with the equally brutal and equally corrupt power wielded less visibly by “official” organizations, like the American government. “Who’s being naive, Kay?”

Aside from the political themes, though, the first two Godfather films are beautifully shot and richly scripted, and the acting and directing are superb.

It’s rare that every element that makes up a good movie — vivid characters, a compelling storyline, great cinematography, memorable music score, a redemptive conclusion — is contained in one movie. I haven’t even mentioned casting, which at the time introduced relatively unknown actors — DeNiro, Pacino, Duvall, etc — and mixed in a classic performance by an extremely well known Marlon Brando.
