THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD

I was shocked in 1997 and continue to be shocked ten years later that the film that established the template for virtually every action/adventure film that followed it is not in the Top 100. The Adventures Of Robin Hood remains one of the most exciting, enjoyable and beautiful looking films of the Golden Era. The 3-strip Technicolor simply can’t be beat. Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland never looked better together. Claude Rains and Basil Rathbone as Prince John and the Sheriff of Nottingham are villainy personified. Alan Hale, Eugene Palette, Patric Knowles, Una O’Connor, Herbert Mundin, Melville Cooper, Ian Hunter…all brilliant as supporting players. The beautiful score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. What is there NOT to like about this film? You can watch it from start to finish and never feel bored or complacent. It is always moving along and keeping you in the story. And these are just a few of the reasons why The Adventures Of Robin Hood belongs in AFI’s Top 100 Films.

Michael Curtiz’ direction, Errol Flynn’s and Olivia de Havilland’s performances, the supporting actors, the cinematography, the art direction, the costumes, the music….everything in this movie is just marvelous!!!

Is the greatest, adventure, swashbuckler, and romantically films in film history. Errol Flynn is the quintessential Swashbuckler. If you have never seen this film, go rent it, treat yourself and your family.

Welcome to Sherwood!

most entertaining, seamless and visually stunning swashbuckler

The model for Star Wars. One of the most beautiful color films ever made. The best swashbuckler ever!

On any day I might give a different list of my top 10 all-time favorite movies, but the film that will always rank near the top is The Adventures of Robin Hood — the 1938 version featuring Errol Flynn, of course. It’s the greatest swashbuckler of them all, featuring the classic story of a champion for the down-trodden facing off against irresistable odds. The cast is terrifice: Basil Rathbone is charmingly menacing as Sir Guy of Gisbourne; Olivia de Havilland is the sweet, naive Maid Marian; Claude Raines plays the oily Prince John; Alan Hale, Sr. is the irrepressible Little John; and the one-and-only Flynn is Robin of Locksley. The musical score by Korngold is magnificent, perhaps the best original score ever.

This film sets the gold-standard for big studio swashbuckling films. The movie solidified Errol Flynn’s position as the leader of leading men. The saucy humir and action along with the brilliant color photography and stirring soundtrack meash perfectly together for an extremely satisfying cinematic experience. No matter how many times I see this film, I always find something new to appreciate. Flynn is at his best and the supporting cast is marvelous. This is an excelllent retelling of the outlaw ballad.

Probably the greatest adventure film ever made.
An incredible performance by Errol Flynn in his prime.
Great chemistry between the two leads.
Maybe the greatest supporting cast ever.
Michael Curtiz action sequences(especially the sword fight at the end between Errol and Basil Rathbone has been copied in countless films)
are breath taking.
The Technicolor print is just beautiful.
This is almost a perfect film, and to not be represented in the top 100 is
shameful.

Classic adventure, swashbuckler, costume drama with superb cast, fantastic sets and epic music score. How could this 4 star movie be left off of the 100 greatest movie list? Shame on all who compliled the list.

A superb example of American movie-making.
The greatest swashbuckler in history.
An adventure, based on long ago beliefs that has laughter, suspense, romance and action.

Errol Flynn and Olivia DiHavailland blend well together

Classic tale of the English nobleman/outlaw

A great cast, lots of action, a well put together plot. The scenery and effects are wonderful for the time. The silhoutted sword fighting scene near the end is a CLASSIC!
