STAR WARS

Must pick the original STARWARS. In the lat e 70’s, it played at my neighborhood theater (the Uptown in Washington, D.C.) for months and months, well over a year for sure. I was young and free and would have dinner (popcorn and chocolate) there in the balcony at least once a week. A few times I was the only one in the theater. I must have seen that movie 50 times and never got tired of it. There’s no other film I’ve seen more than a handful of times at best.

Of all the films i’ve ever seen i am stuck on Star Wars. I have grown up watching the original and the sequels and later the prequels. I cannot define a more original or defining film within blockbuster history than Star Wars.

My favorites change from day to day and hour to hour. Star Wars was my favorite growing up, but The Godfather (I and II) really took over that top spot as I got older. The Lord of the Rings movies are fantastic. Pulp Fiction and The Exorcist would be in the conversation as well. The dark horses, and maybe my favorite under-the-radar movies, would have to be True Romance and Leon (The Professional).

Anyway, this is what’s great about great movies. There is no shortage of films to choose from. You can never get bored.

Seeing this movie at 9 years old back in 1977 just blew me away and changed my movie going experiences from then on. I became a life long fan of the movie and it’s sequels and to this day it remains the benchmark for just about every movie I’ve seen since.

I thought STAR WARS is a great movie because…it was amazingly technolgly advanced for its time. It was a great story with an amazing plot. The acting is way good. I thought this movie was a well thought up movie with great things going for it.

From the opening of the movie with the giant star destroyer filling the screen to the fast-paced editing during the ending, this movie blew me away. Even seeing it now, my mind is taken back to that theater on a hot summer afternoon in 1977. The theater is long gone now and I’m quite a bit older but whenever I watch Star Wars, I’m 14 again and feel like I’m seeing it for the first time. For a movie to have that affect 30 years later and to stir up long forgotten memories means it is truly something special.

With most feel good movies, the feeling lasts about ten minutes, but for me seeing Star wars at age 11, the feel good feeling lasted about a month.

Star Wars is my favorite film of all time because it was the first one I saw. I remember walking into the living room as my parents were watching Episode 4 and the moment I saw Darth Vader, I was hooked. The film has everything a great movie should: a great story, wonderful characters, fun, excitement, adventure, romance and comedy. I’m sad to say there hasn’t been a movie like it since. It is the movie that inspired my to be a writer and started my love of film. To all the Star Wars fans out there, MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!

There are an awful lot of films which were important steps in cinematic evolution, and the top 100 is overflowing with ones that are not. Star Wars, is an obvious one (mentioned way too far down the list from #1), but there are many that never made it into the list.

This is the universal story of good over evil, spiritual search for a higher purpose, and hope over everything else and it does it in a most wonderful and easy way that anybody can relate. I think every other movie of the fantasy-hope seeking kind made after this one had been repeated and followed the same formula as Star Wars. After this movie, it’s just a matter of reinventing the wheel.
Besides, this was the first movie i ever saw, i was 4 years old and it left in my memory the most beautiful remembrances of a movie ever. That’s why is my favorite.

This has been the coolest movie for me for as long as I can remember!

Star Wars for originality that blew our 1977 minds away, it took us to another world with style, imagination and humor

The Searchers for its timeless story and touch of humor in what could have been a very sad movie and it has John Wayne to boot.

I’m in love with Matt Damon in this movie, just my middle age quirk I guess.

at the time, this movie was cutting edge with special effects.

Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Governor Tarkin, R2-D2, C-3PO, Chewbacca, Ben Kenobi, legions of Stormtroopers, a moon-sized space station called The Death Star, a Corellian ship named The Millennium Falcon, X-Wing Fighters, TIE Fighters, a dramatic space battle in a metallic trench, and that classic opening shot of the little Rebel Blockade Runner being pursued over the planet Tatooine by a seemingly endless Imperial Cruiser, makes this film my favorite movie of all-time. STARW ARS is so much fun to watch that I can never tire of the story, the characters, the lines, or even the classic score by veteran composer John Williams. The characters, the story, the music, the experience of watching this movie are as timeless as time itself. This is the first move I have ever seen in a theater where the walls of the theater seem to disappear and catapult the viewer into the action. The “used” or “lived in” look of the future George Lucas created makes this film even more “realistic” in the terms that it feels that it can happen. If you only watch one more film in your lifetime, make it STAR WARS. It brings out the innerchild in everyone who experiences it. So, learn the ways of The Force and see the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs, or the young Jedi that helped the empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights, the resuce of a princess. It’s the story of a boy, a girl, and a galaxy, and isn’t it nice to know that you don’t have to pay millions of dollars to the Unbited States or Russian Space Programs to take THIS ride into space? Why fly to a moon when you can land on a space station? STAR WARS. The “true” final frontier.

Simply the best Star Wars movie ever.

Not even in the top ten?

You people *seriously* need to get in touch with the times.

While I’ve never considered it “the best” movie, it has always been my favorite movie. Its got action and adventure, romance, comedy, a great hero, a great villian, a classic good vs. evil story, and 2 loveable memorable sidekick droids.

Just as Star Wars catapult the science of film into a new era, Star Wars has inspired an entire generation of fans and filmmakers alike to stretch beyond the boundries of what is currently on screen.

The reason I am considering this one of the greatest films of all time is because you have an epic of what defines good vs. evil with a modern and futuristic spin to tell it. And if it wasn’t for Star Wars, which I would have to say is the most ground-breaking film of the 20th Century, there would be no Matrix, no Lord Of The Rings, etc…. This movie brought special effects to the big screen and after this Hollywood never looked back and it was an instant classic, with ground-breaking visuals of things we never thought we’d even dream of seeing, great characters, great story, and just a great epic, defenitely the greatest epic of our time, and the greatest of all time on the big screen.

IN TERMS OF A SINGULAR FILM THAT: TOTALLY CHANGED THE FILM BUSINESS,SAVED A HOLLYWOOD STUDIO FROM CERTAIN DOOM, INSPIRED AN ENTIRE GENERATION OF YOUNG FILMMAKERS ALL OVER THE WORLD, INVENTED THE TERM ‘BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE’….THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT IT’S GEORGE LUCAS’ SPACE FANTASY, “STAR WARS” (1977).

I WAS THRILLED THAT IT MADE INTO THE TOP 20 (AT #13) FOR THE AFI’S TOP 100 MOVIES OF ALL TIME.

THE SUBSEQUENT 5 FILMS THAT COMPLETE THIS EPIC SAGA ARE INDEED SUPERB, BUT THE ORIGINAL FILM IS OUR GENERATIONS “WIZARD OF OZ”

30 years after its May 25th, 1977 release, STAR WARS still has a lasting impact on filmgoers worldwide.

The film has punched a deep hole in the pop culture psyche that bands such as Red 5 & Nerf Herder are named in homage to the film.

STAR WARS still continues create legions of fans worldwide, to the point that, STAR WARS Celebrations are held every few years in honor of the Saga.

I’ve never seen a film saga have such a strong merchandising campaign. From shoelaces, to action figures, to automobiles, the only thing I haven’t seen a STAR WARS logo on, is on a condom!

STAR WARS easily revitalized the sci-fi genre, & is influential in everything from helping STAR TREK get to the big screen, as well as, the 1979 film ALIEN, to making huge leaps in special effects.

What makes STAR WARS stand the test of time? The special effects, John Williams, AFI top rated, score to the film, but, most importantly its the characters of STAR WARS that stand out. From Luke Skywalker, & Han Solo, to Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi to the meanest villian in celluloid history, Darth Vader, STAR WARS has more characters than Rick Blaine could ever find in CASABLANCA.

Last night, STAR WARS jumped two notches from 15 to 13 on AFI’s top 100 movies of all time, & to drop STAR WARS from this list would be an absolute crime.

Remember, ‘The Force’ will be with you, & STAR WARS …, always.

I mean, you can watch it OVER and OVER and it’s just a great movie. I couldn’t sit here and watch many of the top 100 list OVER and OVER like this one…

Your lists should be renamed top 100 movies for fans 65 years and older.

Every generation creates a mythology that creates a universal ideal of heroes and villains. Star Wars creates that mythology for our generation. George Lucas draws upon all aspects of heroism and villainy and gives us an epic tale.

Really, look at the ballot qualifications. It discusses social impact, how a film did via all mediums, and overall influence. Now, I like Singin in the Rain (I really do), but it has no where near the cultural relevance of Star Wars. For as many fans as Star Wars has, I feel there is a Star Wars backlash and that always holds it down. Watch Family Guy, Watch The Office, Watch How I met Your Mother, they all have TONS of Star Wars references. How much money does Pirates of the Caribbean make? A ton….. And it’s a Star Wars clone!!!!! Honestly, you can hate Star Wars, that’s fine (but you’re a clown). But if you cannot say that it is more influential than say….. Singing In The Rain, then you are on crack. Ask your teenaged sons and daughters, ask your friends, ask your partners, do they know the diddy to Singin in the Rain or do they know that the force will be with them….. Always?!?!?!?!?

Should have been nominated in the top 400 but weren’t…..

The imagination of George Lucas is similar to the visionary movies of the 30’s and 40’s that told a story that you kept thinking about and talking about for days after you saw it. A true fairy tale with a hero and a villain and a solid moral base of right and wrong. It is a story that allowed our imaginations to run free and dream about being a princess or a fighter pilot who were both Jedi, protectors of the galaxy. A story of love, sacrafice, and redemption that can be validated for any generation. Oh yeah, I turned my daughter into a Star Wars ubergeek too - she can quote any movie - “Laugh it up, fuzzball!”

I just love the original and diverse characters. So many classic characters in just one movie. I love it!!!!!!!

it’s hard to chose cause there are so many great movies out there but… i say star wars. star wars is in my opinion the greatest sci-fi/action/adeventure film ever created it has affected how we make movies in so many ways it had a great story line and those special effects were almost impossible back then but george lucas pulled tem of fantastically!!!

Empire Strikes Back was very very good.. but since Star Wars was the first, still got to call it the best.

a movie way ahead of its time with a story line like no other.

Still great after 30 years….
