ORDINARY PEOPLE

My mom first made me watch this movie in order to understand the relationships between her older sister, her younger brother, my grandmother, grandfather and my dad. I lived in a world where I truly believed that my grandmother did not have an ounce of ice in her bones. Apparently I was completely wrong. As much as I love “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”, I can not get over this ice princess she played, and how heartless and cruel she was. As time went on in our family, I began to see the direct correlation between my mom’s side of the family and this movie. Then I understood why when I rented the movie, my grandmother wanted nothing to do with it. She died almost two years ago, and even though some harbor ill feelings for her, I have to keep the good. It’s in everyone.

Its not your ordinary movie. Its our life daily..

My favorite Movie. The whole circle of relationships - Father/Son, Mother/Son, Husband/Wife, Friends, Male/Female, and Doctor/Patient is spectacular. I am a middle aged male jock who has never been able to watch this movie without crying. Timothy Hutton, Donald Sutherland, Mary Tyler Moore and Judd Hirsch are fantastic.

This movie touches the heart. Real people trying to live their lives, cope with problems and moving on. It is not always easy and we can feel the emotions of these actors. Life is easy when nothing goes wrong. How do we handle adversity. We all have it at times, sometimes in heavier doses than others.

Such a simple film of an ordinary suburban family coping with the death of a son/brother. Timothy Hutton’s character is so incredibly developed that you can almost read his mind. Everything for him isn’t bleak as there are a few happy moments, but those are dashed when he can’t escape the guilt over losing his brother. And Mary Tyler Moore is the coldest most distant person I’ve ever seen on film. To me, the Best Actress contest between her and Sissy Spacek for “Coal Miner’s Daughter” remains the toughest to call.
