ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST

I still remember the first time I saw it. At least an hour into the film you have no Idea of what is going on, but your mesmorized and continue to watch. The fly landing on Jack Elam’s face, Henry Fonda..oh no he’s the bad guy, Charles Bronson and his harmonica, Jason Robart & Claudia Cardonelli ( probably mispelled but you know who I mean ) weave a most riviting story brilliantly directed by Sergio Leon. THE ULTIMATE WESTERN FILM. Finally bought the DVD when it was released several years ago, and still enjoy watching it. anyone I lend it to always respond with ” Damm what a great movie. ” Didn’t do well at the box office, does well when shown on late night TV but then it takes 4 + hours to watch it. Now within cult western status, wonder where it ranks on AFI’s beyond the top 100 list. Rent it if you can find it, or buy the DVD on Amazon, or if your fliping channels some night and its on, prepair to stay up the rest of the night. But better if your can see it from the start…at that Train Station in the desert !

The haunting harmonica music serves to intensify the outstanding gunfight between Charles Bronson and Henry Fonda. There has not been any such western showdown to come close to matching it!

It is movie making at it’s finest. This is truly a masterpiece. The movie has an excellent tagline “There were 3 men in her life. One to love her, one to kill her and one to protect her”.The suspense about harmonica is mindblowing which is revealed in the end.It has the finest music from staring to the end.Great story above all.Mindblowing performances by
bronson, fonda and cheyyenne.

greatest western of all time

After the success of "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" there was only one question facing Sergio Leone Can I make a better movie than before, and can it be the greatest western of all time? Well, to that question there is only one simple answer "YES!

1. ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST

2. THE SEARCHERS

3. THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY

I am a western movie afficianado.

Sergio Leone is a master of the western and with Fonda, Bronson, Robards, and a gorgeous Claudia Cardinale he hit a home run. And the music score by Ennio Morricone is also outstanding. The showdown at the end of the movie is the best ever filmed. It is sad that more westerns are not recognized by the AFI. They are such a large part of American culture, fictionalized or not.

The greatest Western ever made.

Sergio Leone never got the recognition that John Ford did for making Westerns. However, IMO, this Western is better than the Searchers and the Wild Bunch and stands out as the greatest Western of all time. The movie is told through Ennio Morricone’s great score and Leone’s widescreen imagery, not dialogue, even though the parsimonious dialogue is great. The late Henry Fonda gives a truly chilling performance as Frank, the late Charles Bronson gives a solid performance as the man with the Harmonica, and Claudia Cardinale fits the character of Jill McBain well. However, the best performance is by the late Jason Robards as Cheyenne who could be savage, comedic, and endearing all in the same moment. His last scene with Claudia Cardinale is oddly the romantic scene in a Western, if not ever. When you make the list again, make sure you recognize Sergio Leone’s contributions to American cinema.
