HUD

This movie adaptation of Larry McMurtry’s novel, “Horseman, Pass By”, was much better than the novel. The screenplay by Irving Ravetch and Harriet Frank, Jr in which Hud was made the central character of the movie made the movie great. Hud was the cool, good looking bad boy with the most memorable lines. I am surprised that none of these great lines made your top 100 Movies Quotes list. How about these lines:
1. The only question I ever ask any woman is “What time is your husband coming home?” 2. You don’t look out for yourself, the only helping hand you’ll ever get is when they lower the box. 3. Happens to everybody. Nobody gets out of live alive.

OSCAR WINNING PERFORMANCES BY MELVYN DOUGLAS AND PATRICIA NEAL. PAUL NEWMAN’S OSCAR NOMINATED PERFORMANCE AS THE WOMANIZING, DRUNKEN SON WAS TOP NOTCH.

Hud is a power struggle, whether man vs. nature, man vs. man and man vs. himself. Its a snapshot into a time and place in America that happens everyday on different levels and in different places.

Hud is meaningful to me because it is shockingly underappreciated. Everyone has seen a list of the best movies of the 60’s, and rarely is it not predictable. It is a sort of lost classic that deserves everyone finding it. Movies that get forgotten or don’t garner the historical respect they may deserve are great fun. It’s interesting to see Hud, not knowing anything about it. Could you imagine showing someone The Graduate that has never heard of it?
It might be hard to find someone, but you could do it. Now find a friend and show them Hud. I get a lot of enjoyment from that.
