Gangster

IT HAD EVERYTHING YOU WANT IN A MOVIE IT KEEPS YOUR INTEREST
IN THE WHOLE MOVE ALL THE CAST WAS GREAT

Anytime you add Martin Scorsese with Robert De Nero and some Joe Pesci, you will make one hell of a film.

Brando & Pacino - case closed!!

SIMPLY IT’S GREAT.IT’S ACTING IS UNBELIEVABLE.

Both of these movies are great in every way, they tell great stories (fiction and fact), while maintaining great aesthetics, all the elements of mise-en-scene, not to mention great acting and directing. I realize my descripition of why these films are my favorite are rather vague, but it would take a lot of words and a lot of time to delve into why they are just so amazing to stand the test of time and are my favorite.

How could anyone come up with one favorite movie. I more than the above to go a top of the heap list. I love movies for many reasons. The Pianist is a emotionally powerful work with one of the great acting performances of all time.

American Beauty is funny, hypnotic, lyrical, beautifully photagraphed, great writing, acting………. Great Story telling. Hip.

Godfather I & II all of the above and insightful.

Bulworth: I movie I never tire of watching. It is hillarious……..

Thunder Road….. Robert Mitchum

The Hustler……. Again great cinematography, acting.
Solyaris: But if I had to pick my greatest movie it would probably be Solyaris. A beautiful film that is the most affective film I’ve seen that paints a picture of transcendence and creation.

Just one comment about a movie lot’s of people love and I send to the bottom of my list. Namely 12 Angry Men. Thought this movie was God awful. It does not put you in the room in the sense that you could make a decision on the fate of the person being judged. The evidence used to walk you to this jury’s conclusion was non-existent.

Some will say it’s a biased vote because it’s so recent, but no movie I have ever seen has held my interest from beginning to end like The Departed.

An artistic look at an accurately potrayed mafia family in the 50s.

The Godfather is filmmaking at its best! The acting is superb. This film has more famous scenes than any other film I can possibly think of; the opening monolauge, the wedding, horse head scene, Luca Brasi’s death, Michael’s shooting at the restaraunt, Apollonia’s death, The Don getting shot, Sonny’s death, the meeting with the five families, the conversation with The Don and Michael, The Don’s death, the shooting of the five families, last scene with Michael and Kay. This film and cannot get enough of and each time I see it I learn from it. It is one of a kind.

The prequel and the sequel to the Godfather, this film is superior to the original.

Of all the movies I’ve seen, this is the one I’ve seen the most. I’ve seen this movie about 100 times and it never gets boring. Coppola’s subtle direction and use of the parallel story structure is nothing short of genius and Gordon Willis gets even darker in his cinematography: in some cases he is filming near silouettes. To me, this movie is in my top 3 film noirs of all time. So many memorable scenes and I haven’t even talked about the great acting by Robert De Niro, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, the late Michael V. Gazzo, the late acting guru Lee Strasberg, the late underrated actor John Cazale, and of course Al Pacino. This film is superior to the first one and deserves more than #32.

P.S. On another note, neglecting foreign films makes this list seem empty as many of the films we love are made by filmmakers who were influenced by foreign directors.

The family values in the movie are really important to me, and it should be important to everyone because we no longer have those family values. Thats what makes The Godfather one of the greatest movies ever made

The Godfather is, without a doubt, the greatest movie ever made. I first saw it when I was fourteen years old and from the moment the opening monologue began I was in utter and total awe. I laughed, I cried, I was at the edge of my seat screaming at the screen in suspense–every single microscopic aspect of this movie is wonderful: the acting is wonderful, the writing and plot is wonderful, the directing is wonderful, the cinematography is wonderful, the music is wonderful. Every single scene (the horse head, Corleone dancing with his daughter to the movie’s theme, Michael eating dinner with the cops in the restaraunt, the end baptism/assasination montage…) it memorable; an icon of cinema. Though several other movies come close (The Godfather Part II, Schindler’s List, Annie Hall, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington), any self-respecting movie fan should be ashamed of himself to put any movie above this undeniable masterpiece.

.This is very hard, almost a disservice to those films that I consider my top selections and all time favorites; but you’re asking for just one title.
After spending more than 5 decades watching films and savoring every frame of most of them, I always felt that I was going to select a musical or a Hitchcock film as my top movie, which was until TGF appeared in the early 70’s.
Naturally, I still consider others a remarkable legacy in filmmaking which in turn makes a decision of this nature so difficult, even painful.
Nevertheless TGF, with its warped sense of family values interspersed with their criminal lifestyle offers a grand scale spectacle in dramatic story telling. This is why each time I watch it (and I do at least a couple of times a year) I find it the complete film that I believe it is.

A legend….A mafia masterpiece..Number 1 films in my book.

The fact that it’s about the mafia is merely incidental.

This film shows us everything we need to know about famiy, honor, duty, betrayal, fate, ambition, greed — in other words, life. The fact that it’s about the mafia is merely incidental.

This film is such a great story.

This film is such a great story. It shows the hard times of the mafia underworld. It shows what you through when you are the largest mafia family in America. It has a great story line and many other things to go with that.

This movie delivers everything!

This movie delivers everything! It features great directing, writing and acting. This is also that rare time when the sequal is as good if not better than the original. I’m also a huge Al Pacino fan, and I believe this to be one of his greatest and perhaps one of the single greatest performences of all time!

I hated this movie the first time I saw it …

I was totally appalled the first time I saw this movie (I was about 16 years old). I had been completely obsessed with the original but I felt betrayed at the end of part 2 (*** SPOILERS ***) when Fredo is killed. As I grew older and examined the film thoroughly, I realized that Fredo’s death was completely necessary in the formation of Michael into an unstoppable beast of vengence, greed, and apathy. Part 2 expands upon the themes of Part 1 while simultaneously opening a window to the Corleone family’s history (possibly DeNiro’s most restrained yet most refined performance to date). For those reasons, the Godfather Part 2 earns my highwater-mark of greatest American Film.

THE GODFATHER

This movie is the greatest crime film ever made. Featuring an ensemble cast that played their parts beautifully, this film has had a lasting influence on American film history.

The Godfather is a great movie because the themes of the film are timless. The theme of family and the idea that family is the only thing that matters. In the words of Vito “A man who doesn’t spend time with his family can never be a real man.” Also the theme of something great being passed from one generation to the next. When the Godfather resigns he hands all of his powers over to Michael. It is now Michaels burden to bear. That theme and concept of change is present throughout the entire film, and present throughout all our lives. So we begin to connect the with characters and the story, even though we are not murdering gangsters.

The Godfather is meaningul to me because it showed me how great filmaking can get. It showed me that it doesn’t matter who the subject is, that if done right you can get the audience to feel for even the most dispicable characters. One major reason I think The Godfather is very influential is because the major characters are villains. They are ruthless gangsters and hit men, and yet we feel for them. We the audience feel bad when Santino is shot to death, or when the Don finally passes. That is meaninful to me, it gets me to care about these people. That is why I love it so much and connect with it so well is because I care who lives and dies.

The Godfather is also a flawless film. Everything about it is great: the acting, the score, the directing, and the script are all excellent. It may not be as influential as Citizen Kane, but I feel that it is just as good or even better. That is why it is my favorite movie of all time. Because it is a powerful film that is fun to watch, and it doesn’t get any better than that. Truly filmmaking at its very best. In my view how can you not like it?

Its just the Perfect movie.

Its just the Perfect movie. Marlon Brando does a terrific job and all the cast does the best job at acting i have ever seen. Great plot and dialog too.
By: Walter Snossages

It has a solid and epic screenplay and many perfectionists will tell you it is free of flaws. The cinematography appears relative to the story’s time. A gradual protagonist development unlike The Godfather Part II.

I took Italian 101 and 102 because of this film and movies made as a result of it. Second only to sports my father and I discuss this film and other gangster movies.

An excellent cast, flawlessly acted.

An excellent cast, flawlessly acted. Matter-of-fact, there doesn’t seem to be a flaw in the whole movie. Marlon Brando gives you the performance of a lifetime as the great Don Corleone. Al Pacino seems to be perfect for the part of his son and heir apparent to the acting throne. James Caan was never and has never been better. Rober Duvall, the superb character actor, is stunning. Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, John Cazale are all playing some of their best roles and are catapulted into acting history with this movie. Wonderful screenplay, superb directing, riveting music- if you haven’t seen it, watch it- I’m making you an offer you can’t refuse.
