Film Noir

THE MOVIE IS THE PERFECT COMBINATION OF STORY, ACTING, ATMOSPHERE, MUSIC, CAMERA WORK AND CINEMATOGRAPHY. tHTE FILM WAS SO RELEVANT AT THE TIME AND CAN EVEN BE SEEN AS RELEVANT NOW, (THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF FOR PROFIT BY INDIVIDUALS AND COUNTRIES). ACTING IS SUBTLE WITH OVERLAPPING DIALOGUE (UNUSUAL FOR THAT ERA). FILM NOIRISH, PERFECT BLACK AND WHITE, TILTED ANGLES, PERFECT SPEECHES, AND THAT ZITHER MUSIC. i CAN GO ON AND ON, BUT THE FILM HOLD UP TO MANY SCREENINGS. THE PERFECT FILM

This perfect film has EVERYTHING going for it. It is a Film Noir loaded with mystery, suspense, romance, morality questions and fantastic black and white visuals. It actually gets better, if you can improve on perfection, with each viewing. The Orson Welles chase scenes (in the Vienna sewers) are absolutely incredible. The zither music soundtrack strikes just the right mood. It is criminal to eliminate this bona fide classic from the AFI list. Ray Badgley, Santa Rosa, CA

Easily one of the greatest of the Film Noir genre and the best performance of Joseph Cotten’s career. Orson Wells also had a sensational performance. The directing and writing was brilliant and some of the best lighting ever. This should definitely be considered.

Despite his best efforts, private detective Sam Spade gets drawn into a desperate search for “the black bird” - a prize of untold riches coveted by a motley gang of underworld denizens.

John Huston’s first directorial effort is a flawless piece of Hollywood noir. The superlative cast is led by Bogie as his absolute best as the world-weary Spade. Every scene, every nuance, every bit of dialogue is perfect.

THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI

Why I love this 1947 film noir masterpiece.

I have seen this movie dozens of times and find it just as compelling as I did when I saw it for the first time. It’s a mesmerizing piece of filmmaking by the master, Orson Welles. It also features fine acting and the best performance from breathtaking Rita Hayworth as a blond black widow. Marvelous!

THE GRIFTERS

Starring Anjelica Houston, John Cusak and Annette Benning “The Grifters” tells the story of three con artists intertwining their ways in and around each others’ lives and as the film moves on the stakes get higher…and deadlier.

The first movie that really made me look at film for filmmaking sake, I saw it first in the summer of 1995 when I was 14. A neo-noir thriller that staves interjecting camp in light of actually telling a story, rather it is the essence of noir without the in-joking updates so prominent in most new noirs. The acting is A-one, the direction by Stephen Frears is perfect and the cinematography by Oliver Stapleton so exactly captures the sweat and grime and shodiness of the lives these lowlives lead.

Gene Tierney’s performance - the first technicolor film noir - the strcture of the film.
