DR. STRANGELOVE

Although I’ve seen this at least 30 times, never on the big screen, I have never failed to laugh uproarously. It seems to have a universal appeal to anyone who has questioned authority and it’s lackies.

It has all the elements of a great movie: script, plot, relevance, acting. The parody is perfect.

THE BEST OF ALL TIME, ANYWHERE, EVER

The scene where Slim Pickens reviews the contents of the bomber crew’s survival kits has to be one of the most hilarious moments in film. Beside, who can resist a comedy about the end of the world?

Best of all genres–satire, drama, character work by Sellars is
incomparable–and directed by a master.

This isn’t at the very top of my favorite movie list but it is close. However, it does preside at the top of my funniest movies of all time list. The movie is timeless, and that is what truly makes a great movie. Many people will say that it was significant only during the cold-war but they would be wrong. It has such great, over-the-top performances as well as being chock full of dark wit and humor that it is compelling to all. Since it also steps into rare territory as a comedy that makes you think as much as laugh it remains relevent today. Sorry ‘2001′ fans but this one is every bit as good as your space odyssey. Brilliant in every way imaginable, this masterpiece isn’t satisfied being just one of Stanley Kubricks greatest(and just might be) it is one of the greatest of all time.

Having been a history buff, atomic destruction was in the forefront of most people’s minds. Just two years after the Cuban Missile crisis we saw two very different (and well-done) movie versions of nuclear war - FAILSAFE and DR. STRANGELOVE. The latter helped people see the absurdity and the humor of the arms race.

Of course STRANGELOVE benefits from great writing, great images and great performances.

I grew up knowing we were going to be on the receiving end of an a-bomb someday and have this movie come along……oh, the irony.

Funniest movie of all time!!! Laughed so hard I cried. Terry Southern is a great screen writer.

Just as funny today as it was when made, laughing at death and political folly of humans. Great performances by all involved, and sadly too true.
Unique among films.

Peter Sellers is fantastic.

Nearly a half century later, Strangelove hasn’t lost a bit of it’s fantastic edge…and our leaders haven’t become one iota saner. Timeless.

Simply put, Dr. Strangelove had a greater impact on the collective psyche of the American people than any other film. The timing was eerily perfect for Stanley Kubrik’s adaptation and the cast, most notably Peter Sellers, delivered to perfection. While many may disagree with my opinion of this as the GREATEST film of all time, I feel that few will disagree with it as the greatest and most important comedy in American cinema.

P.S. How great is Slim Pickens riding the nuke? Equally great is James Earl Jones in his debut as a 20-something but already with the distinctive voice.

It’s one of the great films of all time. Peter Sellers is just great and hilarious, the best film Stan Kubrick ever created. It’s intresting that it’s from 1964 and the names are all sexual. I especially like that Miss Scott, played by Tracy Reed.

The ultimate perfect film: writing, direction, casting, music, mood, timeliness, and the importance of the message.

Maybe the Cold War has been over too long for some to appreciate this cultural achievement, but just think: HOW could anyone address the prospect of nuclear annihilation EXCEPT as the blackest of black comedies?

. . . my number two is “Chinatown” (go Spike!) and my number three is “Lawrence of Arabia” (thanks, Ed). What an embarassment of riches!

The funniest film ever made about the end of the world.

The great Stanley Kubrick does the ultimate high wire act somehow balancing nuclear war and dark comedy. No film in history is so entertaining and thought provoking at the same time.

Makes you laugh but then makes you think…

To be able to pull off such a scathing black comedy about the end of the world, one which makes you laugh but then makes you think, is an incredible feat. With Dr. Stangelove, Kubrick has created one of the all time masterpieces.

This movie takes the end of the world very lightly and thank goodness!

This movie takes the end of the world very lightly and thank goodness! If you can’t laugh at the end of the world then you can’t laugh. Every time I watch it I hear and see new things that are funny to me, things that I haven’t noticed before after countless viewings. It’s also beautifully composed in its shots and the satire of it is greater, more astute and less preachy than anything I’ve ever seen concerning politics or governement in film.

Every single one of the actors in this movie performed perfectly!

Every single one of the actors in this movie performed perfectly! George C. Scott was the best, as good or even better than Sellers, whom everyone acknowledges. Kubrick was a genius. The musical score fit perfectly. The screenplay was superb. And though billed as a black comedy, the story was gripping. Even today.

Intelligent and hilarious satire…

Because it has simply the most intelligent and hilarious satire I’ve ever seen in a film.

Kubrick’s masterpiece.
