DOCTOR ZHIVAGO

No movie gives a better account of the Russian Revolution. Recently I read “The Orientalist” the images of Russia before the revolution were stunningly similar to Dr. Zhivago’s. Put this event on film an give it a great love story, with this cast an you have a super film. The list has failed this time around. The list reflects to many agendes.

So, I just watched doctor zhivago for the first time yesterday. I thought it was amazing and I immediately want to watch it again! The costumes and the set, the acting the love story all of the politics. It’s a wonderful movie. It makes no sense to me that the movie could move 59 spots. That’s crazy! I understand Titanic was great but I loved doctor zhivago far more. Hopefully AFI rethinks itself next time!

the acting is superb, the costumes are beautiful, the music score memorable, and the cinematography is phenomenal.

It makes me wonder what the people in this world understand about literature and film. Dr Zivago is without any doubt in the top 10 best films ever made. Every catagory of artistic judgment is at its peak in this film.
From the musical score to acting to photrography it has few if any challangers. Not to mention Rod Steigers greatist role as Victor Komerosky. To disregard this film in any way only indicates that one hasen’t seen it. L.B. Organ

great story, beautiful scenery, wonderful music - for me no 1 and I am extremely surprised it is not even in the top 100.

Set against the backdrop of the communist revoulution this film combines the essence of human tragedy with the ability of Love to pull us all through anything.

Lara’s Theme by itself should have qualified this one for the Top 100!

I believe it shows life as it truly is, complicated and never fair. One man’s struggle with the world and his dichotomy of dealing with two different loves. I think it is the best love story ever seen on the screen.

I can’t believe that DOCTOR ZHIVAGO didn’t make the top 100 list…I would put it in the top 10!!!

I am not much on watching a movie more than once or twice, but I could watch DOCTOR ZHIVAGO monthly.

It even inspired me to read the book. I have excellent reading skills, but that was heavy going, the one who turned it into a movie was brillent!

Now I need to go take a closer look at the list and see if my other favorite movies rated any better.

How does a movie that was ranked 39th in the first Top 100 list not even make the updated list?!? In my opinion, this is David Lean’s finest film. Where else can you have a cast of Alec Guiness, Omar Shariff, Rod Steiger, and Julie Christie. I hope the next anniversary list will include this film.

This movie has it all, story, scenery, music, outstanding acting.

The music is great.
The photography is great.
The acting is excellant.
The story, a classic.

I can’t believe that Doctor Zhivago was not included on the most recent list. The movie is beloved as one of the all time great movies and is a true epic on par with movies like Lawrence of Arabia that was included in the top ten. It has great acting, writing, directing, a historical story, a timeless theme song, and great locations that rival any other movie. This was always my favorite movie until I saw Gone with the Wind, and it still ranks very high on my list. It didn’t need to rank high, but it definitely should have at least been included on this list.

Actually, it’s not my favorite movie, but it is the best script ever written for the screen, as well as the greatest adaptation. While Lean’s sometimes melodramatic direction ages the film, it is a visual feast, carefuly crafted and meticulously edited.

A far greater film than The Searchers, which during the studio scenes were obviously directed with a yawn.

And who would argue against Julie Cristie’s rightful place as one of the greatest ingenues ever.

Put Zhivago back on the list you ninnys.

This is a beautiful film, with strong story and characters, and sweeping cinematography. Story caputures personal conflict within context of one of world’s most significant historical periods.

I don’t understand why it didn’t make the Top 100.

When I started my DVD collection, this was the first one I bought.

How much of the history in the film is true? I am not certain, but
the line : “They’ve shot the czar.” resounds. Russian life for the upper middle class would never be the same again.

I will always love Tom Courtenay for the many off-center parts he played during the 1960’s. Here he is both an idealist and a master villain a perfect yin-yang personality.

Omar Sharif is, of course, brilliant as Yuri.

The beautiful cinematography only enhances the viewing experience–especially the ice “palace”.

I finally watched Dr. Zhivago this past weekend (I’m still making my way thru the first Top 100) and I must admit that this was one of the finest films I’d ever seen. I’m SHOCKED that it wasn’t ranked higher the first time around and very upset that it dropped off of the “updated” list. I’d only wished that I had watched it sooner…definitely needs to make the next “update”.

I have seen this movie at least 50 times over the last 30 years or so - It is absolutely one of the best movies ever made! So beautiful, and very moving - so engaging - how could this be left off the best 100 list - I will never understand this.

What an outrageous omission! How can we take the rest of the list seriously?

I am shocked that this is not included in the top 100. This movie had it all!! Who did the voting anyway? I was mislead to believe AFI was a group of experts in the field of motion picture production.

APPALLED YOU PICKED LESSER MOVIES OVER THIS! SHAME ON YOU!

Shame on AFI. It left off one of the greatest movies ever made, Doctor Zhivago. So much for this organizations credibility. They also left off Fargo, Million Dollar Baby, American Beauty and Gandhi. But practically every movie Jimmy Stewart made was on the list!

Great plot, amazing acting, unbelievable winter scenes, one of the few movies that has ever repeatedly caused me to feel that I was actually present in the movie’s activities, AND an unforgettable theme song.

It didn’t even make the list this time. It is one of the greatest movies ever made. I don’t know why….it just is !!!

This movie is so good and still holds up today as a beautiful love story. I can’t believe it dropped off the top 100 after being so high on the list in 1998 (I think # 39). Who votes for fluff like Tootsie and King Kong anyway?

The imagery still captivates me even after all these years. I first saw this movie with my Mother when I was maybe 10 or 12 years old and so it holds a special memory as well.

—IT HAD TO HAVE BEEN AN ERROR FOR DR. ZHIVAGO NOT TO HAVE MADE THE TOP 100 LIST —ALSO 10 COMMANDMENTS & FIDDLER ON THE ROOF —-

How could you not have included this movie is beyond me. Talk about a great love story! It is my all time favorite.

How can this movie not be in the top 100? I would have expected it in the top ten! The filming, the acting, the history! How was this film overlooked?

I’m 58 years young & I saw this movie when I was 12, I grew up right there at the Rialto Theater. Believe it or not, I saw this movie in a double feather (you got 2 movies and a cartoon for the price of a ticket those days)…the other movie that day was ‘West Side Story’….can you image how these 2 movies affected a 12 year old girl…I fell in love with Omar Sharif, right there that Summer afternoon watching Doctor Zhivago….and then saw myself as a young Nataile Wood in West Side Story….I was never the same again! (lol my mom thought I had lost my mind) lol….2 great movies to watch…
