Just surprised “DANCES” missed the cut! Or am I mis-reading something? I thought the photography was extraordinary, and certainly the performances of the lead actors/actress were quite strong.

My respect for the AFI’s new 100 List is greatly diminished with the omission of this film. How can that be? I’m really rather angry about this.
Why is it that so many forget how groundbreaking this film was? After a century of persecution of Native Americans, both politically and cinematically, this film made them into human beings. If this was an “apology film,” so be it. They deserved one. In addition, the film ran over three hours long at a time when Hollywood didn’t think we’d sit that long, it contained subtitles which Hollywood believed was the kiss of death, and it was an example of a genre Hollywood decided was no longer viable. YET…. AFI’s voters exclude it! What is wrong with you?
The film is a cinematic marvel with perfect performances from Costner on down to an amazing Graham Greene. The cinematography, music, and art direction is some of the finest I have ever seen. I know of a young man — a Goodfellas fan — who didn’t want to see this film because of the anger so many Scorcese fans still have for this film. Yet, after he saw it, he had to agree it is a fine film and he chuckled when he admitted that he actually enjoyed it!
This is a work of art. And I’m sick to death of second-guessers, critics, and those that belittle it because it beat out Goodfellas. I’m sick of Costner critics who refuse to see the sure hand of direction here. For AFI to kick it off the list is like a last straw. The only other film of that year with box office legs that even competed with this film was Home Alone. This film deserves respect and AFI didn’t give it. Shame on you.

This movie has everything..incredible cinematagraphy…comradery, romance, great battles, and it is an authentic look at the great frontier and the natives that inhabited the land at the time. Its the first movie I’ve seen that depicts “Indians” fairly. Costner directs an epic that richly deserves all the awards it received in 1990, including best picture. It was by far the best picture that year -in fact it is the best picture of all time!

…for not including BRAVEHEART and DANCES WITH WOLVES on this list. Omitting these two cinematic classics from the Top 100 is almost a crime.

Not only is Kevin Costner believable in this movie, the rest of the cast of characters are excellent! Graham Green and all the others are wonderful. I also appreciate the longer version of the movie that shows the humanity and humor of Native Americans. So many movies show them to be pagan murderers, when they love and mourn the way all humans do.

Oh come on. With so many movies to choose from, I know it’s not an easy task, and that so much is left up to personal taste, but you can’t tell me that Toy Story is a better movie than Fargo for instance, or that E.T. is better than Dances With Wolves. What the heck? And then there is Braveheart. WOW……….almost makes me mad. And then to put Lord Of the Rings 50th? LOTR movie/series raised the movie making bar. I don’t agree with the list, very dissapointed!
Titanic???? Oh Please, give me a break.

How can a movie, which everyone knew was going to win Best Picture before the awards show even started, not be in the top 100? Kevin Costner is one of the most underrated actors of this generation and the fact that this was his directorial debut spoke volumes. There aren’t many reasons for me to sit in front of a TV for over 4 hours (if you’re watching the extended version. And if you aren’t, you aren’t really watching Dances.) I can watch this movie once a week and never get sick of it. 4 of my top 5 favorites of all time ore on the list, Dances is the only one missing.

It’s a travesty that this remarkable film, which was a Best Picture winner, agree or not, to be left off of the top 100. When this list first came out ten years ago, it was either in the 80’s or 90’s, which was sad. Who votes? As an avid film fan, this film encompassed everything filmmaking should be and can become. It is simply breathtaking in almost every frame.
Shame on the voters.
P.S. There were others that are not on the list that are simply mind boggling.

I’m upset that this movie didn’t make it this year onto the 100 greatest American movies. This movie comes on regular television atleast 100 times a year. Every time it comes on, I watch at least part of it, if not the whole thing!

FOR THIS MOVIE TO NOT BE IN THE TOP 100 IS A JOKE!!!! THIS MOVIE IS TOP 10 HANDS DOWN!!! WHO PICKS THESE TOP 100? I KNOW THERE IS AN APPRECIATION FOR CLASSICS BUT TO SAY THAT MOVIES DONE TODAY AREN’T UP TO THE CALIBER OF MOVIES DONE IN THE 30′S AND 40′S IS ABSURD.

DANCE WITH WOLVES was the first non-animated movie I ever recall seeing as a child. This film reminds me of lazy Saturday afternoons when I would curl up on the couch with my father and watch it with him; (it was his favorite too and we watched it a lot). To me this film is amazing on so many levels; not only does the audience get an intimate acquaintance with the Sioux tribe and their daily culture, (a first for film portrayals of Native Americans), but there is also the powerful character transformation of John Dunbar, who becomes his true self, Dances With Wolves. “As I heard my Sioux name called out over and over, I knew who I really was.”
This film also has AMAZING cinematography, capturing the beauty of our country and the magnanimous nature of our great plains, and it featured a REMARKABLE one-time take of a Bison Hunt with real bison and real horsemen, (props to Kevin for getting back on the horse after his fall). Plus, as a woman, I appreciate the dynamic love story between Dances With Wolves and Stands With A First.
Costner and author Michael Blake did an amazing job combining their efforts to create this masterpiece.
