COOL HAND LUKE tells the story of a poor drifter who can’t find his place in life. Paul Newman portrays the main character with sincerity and great emotion. Luke’s struggle is a universal theme we can all connect with. Some of the many highlights of this film include:
Luke’s poignant visit from his mother, the lighthearted egg-eating contest, the roadtarring scene, and Luke’s desperate plea to God in the chapel. Fine performances from all the supporting actors - George Kennedy (Oscar winner), Wayne Rogers, Lou Antonio, Strother Martin, others - make this a movie classic. To me, it’s the most underrated movie ever made !

I cannot believe that Cool Hand Luke didn’t make the top 100. It is one of the best movies ever made. I feel that Cool Hand Luke and a Rebel Without a Cause were robbed.

It was this movie that taught me that no matter how tightly the modern American fist tightens around us, we may yet be free. Perhaps the road tarring scene shows that above all. There is, I think, no more beautifully simple movie than this one.

Great acting. You root for the under dog but can’t say if he wins or loses. Classic scenes like that can’t be beat - egg eating, jail yard fight were Luke refuses to stay down, car washing girl. Favorite lines - “Yeah, well, sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand” and of course “What we got here is failure to communicate”

I think sometimes in life we all start feeling like Luke.
I think sometimes in life we all start feeling like Luke. We just want some answers, to know if the man upstairs is really there sometimes helping us out, or are we all alone in this big world. And I just love the way Luke takes it all in stride. All the problems and confusions going on, and he still, all the way up to his final breath, has a smile on his face. That’s cool!
