CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND

It is just such a fantastic film about the degeneration of the life of a man when he encounters the extraordinary. It is truly a spectacular moviegoing experience. You just feel for this man’s pain and his passion as he starts carving images of a tall structure out of shaving cream and mashed potatoes, slowly pushing his family away because of his obsession. Many movies have attacked this theme, but few have done so so successfully. I literally get tingles down my spine when we get to the point when he actually makes a giant sculpture out of mud in his living room. It’s just so out-there, and yet so in place in a film with aliens. And let’s not forget that alien abduction scene, which manages to be one of the most intense that I’ve ever seen. And the awe you feel when you finally see all of those ships flying around at the end, and the amazing five-tone “song” that permeates the whole film, and John William’s achingly beautiful score- in other words, this is a truly fantastic and memorable movie that I dearly love and I think more than deserves to be called my favorite movie.

Although I can not say what my favorite movie of all time is… CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND is ONE of my favorites. The films story of a man falling appart and losing his family is brilliantly told by Steven Spielberg. Not only does it have excellent performances, beautiful visuals and cinemetography, and fantastic special effects (especialy for that time period) but it is with out a doubt the most original (and in my opinion the greatest) potrayal of UFOs and alian life that I have ever seen. This is all topped off by one of John Williams greatest scores that absorbs you into the huge heart of the film itself. So one thing I just don’t understand…
WHY WAS THIS TAKEN OFF THE TOP 100 LIST?

Another movie which was conspicously missing from the top 100. It has to rank as one of the most fascinating science fiction movies to ever come out. Richard Dreyfuss was amazing as one of the many common people who were mysteriously drawn to the place where the aliens landed. The scene near the end of the movie when he goes up into the ship was extremely heartwarming. I’m not saying it belonged in the top ten, but definitely in the top 100.

I like the story of man’s search for meaning and hope. The soundtrack is awesome!

Humankind’s first encounter with an alien civilisation
Movies can be judged by their enduring influence, and CE3K–and Star Wars–forever changed the landscape of fantasy films; it was like replacing your old black & white TV with a color model! Close Encounters is still a cinamatically stunning, wondrous movie experience.

For better or worse this is a movie that shaped the course of my life.

For better or worse this is a movie that shaped the course of my life. Prior first seeing Close Encounters in 1977, I was contemplating either persuing a career in journalism or film production. After seeing Close Encounters, I had only one career path in mind and that was to get into film production as a screenwriter. Although I haven’t realized my main goal of making a living as a screenwriter, I have been working in film and television production from 1987 to the present.
