Angels With Dirty Faces

I consider films to only be truly great if they can be timeless. 70 years later this film can still be moving. Angels With Dirty Faces can be considered one the films that defines the Warner Brothers 1930’s gangsters films. The cast is as perfect as any can be with James Cagney leading the way. The story is original and the climatic ending is both shocking and moving. Maybe its just the mood Im in… but Angels With Dirty Faces is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen.

James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart are spectacular in their respective roles. They compliment one another throughout the entire film, and there is never a dull moment. Pat O’Brien makes a great Priest, and also works well with Cagney. I show this movie every year to my film students, and this is usually their first exposure to a black and white movie. They love it!
