ADAPTATION

The movie operates on so many intersecting levels…

The movie operates on so many intersecting levels that are touching, sad, ironic, hilarious. Kaufman’s script penetrates into the mind of the writer while at the same time being faithful to Susan Orlean’s “The Orchid Thief”. Kaufman is making art here, knows he is making art. It is a movie about what makes someone passionate and what people will do to find it. Kaufman’s blend of fact and fiction, supplied with levels of meta-fiction and irony creates a concordance with the different meanings of the word “Adaptation”. And that doesn’t even mention the performances, which, every single one transcends most acting today. The film’s technical aspects are a marvel. All together this is one of the most striking, if weird, cinematic experiences.

The quintessential movie about movies.

This is the quintessential movie about movies. It tells the story of Charlie Kaufman’s attempt to adapt a novel into a screenplay, while fighting the commercialisms of Hollywood. The beautiful tale of how to write a film changed my life, and taught me just how important a film can be. Its about more than cinema, it’s about living.
