OK, so this 1965 masterpiece is in B&W… it doesn’t matter. The content and the acting is so vivid that one imagines the colors, specially in drab New York of that period, and the photography was so well done that it reminds me of pictures by Steichen or Ansel Adams. But really, the emotions expressed by Robards, Barbara Harris, Daniels, Balsam and, of course, Barry Gordon are of such depth that one really doesn’t want the picture to end but, as it must, Robards finally sees the light at the end of the tunnel and capitulates/succumbs to the necessity of giving up his fight against the ordinary and returning to the tastelessness of working for an idiotic TV performer in order to safeguard the lives of ‘Nick’ (Barry Gordon) and ‘Sandy’ (Barbara Harris.) Perfection in the story, perfection in the production and extreme perfection in the acting. This has got to be the best Hollywood has done and maybe it ever will have.
