December 2007

The beauty of the spontaneous moments captures the idea of what we all want to believe love is. It is an outlandish romance which catches even those of us who are cynics of love by surprise as the characters fall in love with the real, flawed parts of each other. I can’t flip by it on tv without stopping, despite the hundreds of times I’ve already seen it. It’s a magnetic piece.

I don’t know how many times I have seen this movie If it comes on television I have to sit and watch. I just think it captures all of the possible complexities of the subject…and the heartbreaking complexity of the characters. Is there a more powerful scene in film than Denzel Washington being whipped at the order of his reluctant commanding officer (Matthew Broderick)? So much expressed in those few minutes without a spoken word. Outstanding performances by some of the best:Washington, Broderick, Freeman, Brauer….. just beautiful.

The genius of Mel Brooks with innovations such as:
Count Basie and his band in a western
Opening scene with workers and foremen singing.
Yiddish speaking Indian
Whole town of Johnsons
Howard Johnson ice cream shop - 1 flavor.
“Candygram for Mongo!”
All the badman recruits
Toll gate on the prairie
The Dom Deluise segment
And so much more.

A brilliant film about the self serving Politicans who pretend to serve the people. Perhaps not the best screenplay ever, but a moving and thought provoking story.

Argueably the funniest movie ever made. All credit to the actors, but don’t forget the Director who created so many great films. The greatest director in my opinion. His film Avanti needs to be re evaluated !
MA

Spencer Tracy at his best. A great story and glory to all who acted in it.

SEPARATE TABLES, a British made film with Burt Lancaster, Rita Hayworth, Debora Kerr and David Niven Great British writing, superb acting. Surprising that it does not make the Best 100 Film List.
MA

TUNES OF GLORY, a British made film with Alec Guinness and John Mills.
A great film. Superb acting. A surprise that it does not make the 100 list.

I do not understand how this movie isn’t in the top 100, it’s a catastrophe.

AVANTI is among my favourite movies. In the same class as Some Like it Hot. Surprisingly it does not make even the 100 Best movie list !
Watch it and you will enjoy it. The Director and Jack Lemmon at their best.
MA

BEN HUR, one of the greatest cinematic epics of all time as evidenced by it’s 11 academy awards, is being moved off the list.

I’m sure there are many rationalizations but the real reason is clear. It’s a religous movie. The antireligous bias of the current hollywood establishment has tainted your artistic integrity and scholarly reputation.

Film lovers, regardless of their beliefs, are deeply disappointed.

For one simple fact when scrolling through the TV listings I always stop and watch the Godfather, Ive seen it over 30 times, read the book, watched the documentaries on it. Memorized much of the script. It has a great cast, great direction, and a story that even those who dislike the Mafia, adore this movie because of what else it represents. Many individual great performances perhaps never to be topped. Seeing it is #2 on your recent list it is agreed upon by many millions I’d guess

From the opening of the movie with the giant star destroyer filling the screen to the fast-paced editing during the ending, this movie blew me away. Even seeing it now, my mind is taken back to that theater on a hot summer afternoon in 1977. The theater is long gone now and I’m quite a bit older but whenever I watch Star Wars, I’m 14 again and feel like I’m seeing it for the first time. For a movie to have that affect 30 years later and to stir up long forgotten memories means it is truly something special.

This movie is a great “guy” movie. It always reminds me of my friends growing up. The cast was supurb with Mickey Rourke, Steve Guttenberg,Kevin Bacon,Tim Daley,Daniel Stern,Paul Reiser and Ellen Barkin. It has terrific nastalgia with an old style diner and the use of Baltimore and the Colts as a backdrop. Always my favorite.

Witty, sharp and acerbic script - the delivery of the dialogue is perfect! There isn’t a weak performance in this movie. It is definitely the first great comment on the fame game. I don’t think this film will ever be bettered ( no pun intended!).

Life takes us were we least expect it go. But there is always hope for a second chance

Stanley Kubricks “2001: A Space Odyssey” is my favorite movie, because it is great, just great! I’ve never seen such a clever, great and genius movie like that. And the music is also great!

It’s just great! Look closer… and live your life to the fullest because, in the end, we only live once.

It is a movie that is pleasant, satisfying, shows an area seldom addressed…that is, age, friendship, ingenuity, surviva land the reality of the It is real. Those are real women, no script, just ideas and heart. I can see it many times and still get great pleasure and joy and hope.So good, I want to share it with everyone. Not too well known and it deserves to be recognized.

This movie features the greatest comedians of all time. It is pure entertainment that brings you back to simpler innocent times.

This is my favorite movie is Anchorman because it is so quotable, is has funny jokes and hilarious one-liners, it is very joyful and happy and it contains characters that you will love. All ln all, this is a really funny movie.

I am really suprised that this movie is not on the top 100…it is better than half of the movies on the list. I was captivated the first time I saw it, shocked, uncomfortable and touched at the end…yet it doesn’t just end there, but keeps me thinking about my own responsibility in regards to discrimination, antisemitism and racism - it makes me look into myself. Gregory Peck, Celeste Holm (oscar), Dean Stockwell, Dorothy Mcguire, John Garfield, Anne Revere - all the performances by all the characters are wonderful. This movie deserves a place in the top 50.

the absolute perfection of scene where the father is confronted by oldest son after crossing the picket line… pure emotional release of doing something against the fiber of his being because he wanted every opportunity for his youngest son… even if that opportunity is almost anathema to him… a father overcoming his own doubts and limitations out of irrepressible love for his kid… the scene captured the human condition on so many levels… amazing…

There’s nothing to criticize about this masterpiece. Everything works: the writing, the direction, the cinematography, and most of all the cast and the story. It’s sequel is almost as good as this and is certainly worthy of mention on any top 20 list of great movies.

Even more impressive, The Godfather was shot on a shoestring budget with few special effects. This movie proves that a big picture doesn’t need a big budget.

GWTW is the best movie of all time. It’s such a great love story, as well as being an epic of one of my favorite eras of American history.

There are a lot of great movies not on this list but I realy would like to see in ten years alot of those silent flms, Chaplain films, even some of those Groucho flicks and there are a couple more that seem a little bit too out dated, not only that but an overkill of speciic actors. I feel pick their best done film and give room to some of the newer classics. I’ll probably discredit everything I’ve written by stating Groundhog’s Day is a great movie in every single way and hope to see it break the top 100 some day!

I was quite discouraged when The Great Escape did not make AFI’s top 100 either year. How could anyone overlook this amazing film?

It is undoubtedly my favorite and has been since a young age. What else tells of such perserverance and honor and patriotism and the capacity of the human heart. Why, each character was so in-depth and incredibly well-cast. There is humor, mostly in the form of irony, but there is also seriousness, a bitter heaviness and touching truth that comes with war and captivity. It is a tale of the heart, of human perserverence, of the cruelties of war and others, and of rebellion.

There is one movie that I am always surprised is not contained in AFI’s list, and that is The Great Escape.

A most enjoyable musical. I enjoy seeing Ron Howard at his youthful best. Imagine a 5 or 6 year old, acting out a lisp. Shirley Jones as a prudish librarian, and Robert Preston the ultimate con man, who falls for the librarian. Scenary is so quiet and relaxing and the final scene of the band and their uniforms is breathtaking.

Pert Kelton, as Marion’s Mother, Paul Ford as Mayor Shinn, Buddy Hackett is Marcellus, who knows Harold Hill’s true identity and covers for him. I love the song, “Ya Got Trouble.”

MONUMENTAL Story,Cinematography, Acting by Liam and Ralph, Direction, Editing, Sound Track,,,simply SUPURB A TRUE PIECE OF ART.

Jack Webb is good but only as good as his team. William Conrad is a veteran newspaperman that make the movie “30″ a great movie and is an asset to all the great newspaper men of America.

Jim Bathgate’s (William Conrad) definition of a newspaper to David Nelson is a classic…………
