With Rogers and Hamerstein’s first production, we have here a real classical masterpiece.
In the world of love stories, “Oklahoma!” teaches a number of beautiful lessons. The character who had pornographic pictures all over the wall of his apartment was deemed a very sick person. Even he realized that this habit of his was not right, as he declared that he was going to get “a real girl.” His problem though was that he was totally oblivious to the old solid rule that there is a right way and a wrong way for a person to try to get what he or she wants.
The girl who could not make up her mind about which man she loved and would thus want to marry, was also presented as being a real nut. Her promised fiance clearly laid it out to her that she could not spread her love over different men, and that her relationship with him could not be a halfway arrangement.
This is such a great breath of fresh air! It is so wonderfully the exact opposite of “Desperate Housewives” and “Wife Swap” and “Sex and the City” and countless other filthy TV shows, movies, stage plays, and even classical operas that justify and glorify this severe sexual perversion of adultery with another man’s wife.
