ANNIE (The original 1982 version with Albert Finney and Aileen Quinn)
Posted by Yisroel Feldman under ANNIE , MusicalThere is a class of stage/screen plays called “musicals.” There is a class of stage/screen plays called “beloved musicals.” And, there is a class of stage/screen plays called “most beloved musicals.” Annie is certainly in this third category, for who cannot but love this beautiful little make believe story and all its wonderful characters!
A special feat of this performance is similar to what I noted about the character of “It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World.” It is presented as an amusing comedy, but it is really about an extremely serious problem: the abuse of children in orphanages.
The key factor of the presentation that makes it so beloved is its spirit of optimism that is brought out by the play’s upbeat signature song “Tomorrow.” There is no question about it: the attitude of optimism, the great yearning of people to want to be able to be optimistic, forms a key part of people’s emotions and personality. Yea, the feeling, and really, the realization, that somehow, someway, and somewhere, “tomorrow” will be a better day, that good times are coming, and that “happy days” will be “here again,” is something that is deeply at the foundation of the human essence.
This principle is thus at the core of human civilization. “New Age” is not some freaked out concoction of the Hippie world. On the contrary, it is a major fact that has been taught throughout history by all religions: the world is moving toward a series of new and better eras. These more positive times will include: true peace, tranquility, and harmony, tyranny replaced by justice and righteousness, the dead being brought back to life, and humanity being brought to its perfection of union with its Creator.
