COOL HAND LUKE tells the story of a poor drifter who can’t find his place in life. Paul Newman portrays the main character with sincerity and great emotion. Luke’s struggle is a universal theme we can all connect with. Some of the many highlights of this film include:
Luke’s poignant visit from his mother, the lighthearted egg-eating contest, the roadtarring scene, and Luke’s desperate plea to God in the chapel. Fine performances from all the supporting actors - George Kennedy (Oscar winner), Wayne Rogers, Lou Antonio, Strother Martin, others - make this a movie classic. To me, it’s the most underrated movie ever made !

He reminds me of me, except the I have virtue. I am reminded of another Newman role (in “Hud”) where another Supporting Oscar winner said to his character, “You’re an unprincipled man, Luke”. Melvin Douglas said it.
