After claiming the number 60 spot on the original list, I expected “Rebel” to move even higher this time around. It is by far one of the great American films. Full of angst, romance, violence, family troubles, and understanding it is also one of the most real films ever created. Shockingly, it didn’t even make the list. What about this movie caused it to be shunned as one of the 100 greatest American films? It featured a wonderful script, amazing performers(especially James Dean in his seminal performance), and had more cultural impact than most movies ever will. Dean was able to solidify his talent and star power in only three movies and this is the one he will be most remembered for. “Rebel” not only influenced a generation I believe it awakened that generation. I was incredibly upset and dissapointed by it’s exclusion on the list. I only hope that in ten more years this error will be corrected. -Jessica

Good point. They dropped Giant from the new list as well. Where’s the James Dean love, where is it?!

the trouble with teenager ‘defy authority’ pictures is that new generations have different pictures that represent their own angst. the current ‘young people’ are not likely to look back a generation for their examples (regardless of whether the quality of the film was superior) and the ‘old people’ who worshipped the film in their youth now either regard other themed films as more significant, no longer vote on these issues or are dead.
