THE WIZARD OF OZ

I am a 21-year-old devoted film buff. I have loved film for as long as I can remember. The Wizard of Oz is my favorite movie for many different reasons.
The Wizard of Oz is a very important movie for me not only because it is so layered and deep, but also because I have a very special connection with Judy Garland. I was so happy to see it listed as the #6 best film ever made on AFI’s Top 100 list! It is a very advanced film that is all too often written off as a purely children’s movie. It is far from that.

An army of mercenaries discover an untouched German valley hamlet during the 30 Years War. Only a clever wandering teacher who stumbles in, and the masterfully shrewd local burgher prevent certain bloodshed and destruction.

The Last Valley cemented my understanding of the central dilemna of all organized religions…the abuse of its power. It illuminated the relentless victory of secular administration in a well ordered society under skillful leadership.

unconventional filmaking from start to finish
Something about this movie always gets me. I always think Jack will make it out of the window at the end. It’s just great unconventional filmaking from start to finish.

Clever and tragic with a surprising twist. Excellent writing, acting, directing. Great classical allusions.
I love everything about this movie - the dark ending, the Greek and biblical references, the water as a means of power, sight/soul play, everything.

the planets aligned for this masterful film to be made. Perfect from start to teary finish

It is a film that was breathtakingly beautiful to watch. Cinematography , music, script, actors, director and writers all danced the perfect dance . You are allowed to watch this secret life play out with all the bumps and bruises. Hard to watch at times while joyous at others. Repeated viewings reveal more and more. This is the greatest love story I have ever watched on film…or real life for that matter

Like no movie yet in the history of film
Like no movie yet in the history of film, this movie told the story of those of us who did time in the spiritual prison of the closet. Ang Lee’s brilliant movie reached down in to the depths of us and pulled our story out into the light in all its beauty and pain. I will be grateful forever to this man and to the writer Annie Proulx for giving voice to a story never before told so powerfully to a mainstream audience. This film made history, and its production values, directing, and acting were so flawless it could not be dismissed in the guise of movie criticism. What a powerful mix. Also Jake Gyllenhaal has got to be the most adorable actor ever, on screen and off. (I do have my shallow side!)

No movie has ever affected me the way Brokeback Mountain has.

No movie has ever affected me the way Brokeback Mountain has. It’s been over a year since I saw it, and it still impacts me daily.

it portrays a very tender love, tolerance for others (and those who haven’t got any tolerance)

both lead characters together embody some of my strongest conflicting feelings. it really makes me think about whether i’ll ever be able to combine them and control them into a coherent picture of myself, or if i even can.both lead stars are absolutely supurb and provide extremely accurate performances in relation to the written story (hey, i’m no little kid here applauding young stars, i’m in my late 50’s). performances by ledger and gyllenhaal have impacted me in so many ways that i can’t even begin to describe them. it reminds me to appreciate the nuances of loving as well as making me examine some of my own conflicting feelings about death in a manner that other movies i’ve seen have not. heck, it impacts me in many many ways, none of them bad. this is a very poor expression of what to me are the life enhancing topics so well described by these performances and situations i know all the things it does to and for me, i feel them in my head and heart but cannot translate them into words. it’s uplifting, it’s heart breaking, it portrays a very tender love, tolerance for others (and those who haven’t got any tolerance), the ineffible things that make up people’s lives and more…..

BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN

I will never be the same.

Just like Jack and Ennis, I came down from Brokeback Mountain forever changed. Their lives, their story, their tragedy still brings tears over two years later. To have found the one thing, the most precious gift each human strives a lifetime for - love - only to be denied its strength and fullfillment because of society’s hatred has carved a hole deep inside. And what makes it ache all the more - society would still turn its back on Jack and Ennis today.
Ang Lee’s sweeping landscapes tell a simple, stark tale. Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana’s words capture the beauty and depth of Miss Proulx’s originals. The cinematography, the musical score, the supporting players, everything are all perfection. But, it is Heath Ledger’s Ennis and Jake Gyllenhaal’s Jack that make this movie real, true, alive. They are Jack and Ennis. And because of them, I will never be the same.

Finally, Hollywood is admitting there is more to life than what they have been showing

Finally, Hollywood is admitting there is more to life than what they have been showing. I have never before had a film hit me in the gut like this one. Each time I saw it, I was unable, at the end, to get up and depart. I just sat there weeping.

They’re the ousiders with the powers to save the world.

Ther’re the ousiders with the powers to save the world. Yet society hates them just because they have a few genetic quirks. They have powers such as: Optic blasts, weather control, telekinesis, and unbreakable adamantium claws. Why do they fight for a world that hates them?, because they think that ordinary humans will understand them for who and what they are, and not to try and cure them.

Every time I watch it, I feel like a kid again.

Every time I watch it, I feel like a kid again. The most powerful moment is when Dorothy steps from her brown home into the vivid world of Oz. The music heightens the sensation of childhood with it’s light and bouncy score. But mostly, the timeless characters and tunes. Dorothy and her companions all have something to relate to, cause who isn’t searching for something they don’t inwardly have?

It takes me back and it’s good to feel like a kid again.

it takes me back and it’s good to feel like a kid again. It has great music, great performances and a story that stills resonants even 66 years after it’s release

WINTER LIGHT

This is film is beautiful in its authenticity and blunt reality.

Winter Light is a film that deals with the struggles of faith, and also, the struggles that we all have in dealing with communication. The swedish title is ‘The Communicants’ and is a sort of ironic understatement when one views how the characters interact. Every camera movement, every line, and every movement of the characters has a meaning. This is film is beautiful in its authenticity and blunt reality.

Young people try to find their lives in a labyrinth of cruelty.

It is about life at the extreme. It has everything and can relate to everyone, although most of us may take comfort that our lives have not been quite as horrible. The film is a combination of story types-comedy, drama, melodrama, tragedy, psychological piece, and blood-fest. There’s plenty of sexuality, but it is pretty tame when viewed today.

I especially like the use of the Wizard of Oz as a backdrop for the film. The insertion of Cage’s idolization of Elvis is a fun balance against Dern’s Wicked Witch.

Everyone should see this movie so they can fully appreciate film as a true art form.

I first saw this movie when I was ten years old and I truly believed that animated characters and flesh and blood people coexisted. Even though I now know it was all pretend I still find this movie magical. Everyone should see this movie so they can fully appreciate film as a true art form.

WEST SIDE STORY
West Side Story is one of the greatest if not *the* greatest stage to film adaptation.

West Side Story is one of the greatest if not *the* greatest stage to film adaptation. Every element of this story: music, song & dance is powerful in a modern-day retelling of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo & Juliet”.

A timeless score by Leonard Bernstein & Stephen Sondheim featuring the classics, “Somewhere”, “Tonight”, “One Hand, One Heart” and “America” are perfectly complimented by powerful energetic dances re-created for the screen from their original stage versions by master choreographer Jerome Robbins who along with Robert Wise received co-directing credit on the picture.

MOVIES BROADENS MY UNIVERSE Before TV and Internet, movies, together with literature, since my childhood have provided me a much farther scope than my own real life experience. Movies are for me a chance to learn from other’s good or bad experiences.

West Side Story is an extraordinary mix of the best of music, dance, theater and a wonderful story.

Modern day Romeo and Juliet story circa the 1950’s. Two street gangs clash over street turf on the west side of New York City. In the middle of the bigotry and intolerance, lovers from two different backgrounds must find peace.

With the civil rights movement coming to the forefront of our nation’s concern during the time of this movie, it was a backdrop in getting people to talk and act upon the injustices that were portrayed in the story. I know, it’s only a movie, but what a movie! Wonderful acting, story, dancing…and the music, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, music by Leonard Bernstein, their music…is Music!

Christopher Guest and his crew of lovable misfits put the world of community theater in their sights.

I’m an actor who spends a lot of time engaged in community theater, so this film has an all-too-familiar feel to me, even though nothing I’ve been involved in has been this comically bad. Catherine O’Hara, Fred Williard, Eugene Levy, Parker Posey, and Christopher Guest; all brilliant.

This is one movie that is well acted, well directed, well written.

This is one movie that is well acted, well directed, well written. Julie Andrews gives one of her best performances as a woman pretending to be a man in one of the best musical comedies ever. She shows her comedic talent as a singer, actress, and dancer. Not to mention her supporting cast of Robert Prestion, James Gardner and the wonderfull Leslie Ann Warren. Blake Edwards has directed another movie that will be remembered as one of his greatest movies of his life.

VICTOR/VICTORIA

A woman, pretending to be a man, pretending to be a woman.

I find it a fabulous commentary on: a) Paris just before the war, b) the gay community, especially since it was made in the early 80’s, and c)Julie Andrews, James Garner, Robert Preston, Alex Karras and Leslie Ann Warren are downright amazing.

Not much of an entertaining story here. Basically I was bored and picked this out of the library.

Vertigo was not only the first film of Alfred Hitchcock that I saw, but it was the first film I saw with Jimmy Stewart, my personal acting GOD. His performance, going from his nice-guy persona to the seriously messed up S.O.B transcended everything I knew about acting. It is, in my opinion, the greatest performance done by an actor on film.

Hitchcock’s classic masterpiece.

A suspenseful love story that’s filled with obsessive twists and turns. Talented cast. Beautifully photographed. Haunting film score by Bernard Herrmann. Hitchcock’s classic masterpiece.

Hitchcock does everything right in this romantic suspense thriller.

This is the perfect movie.

This is the perfect movie. It is beautifully filmed and powerfully acted. It is thrilling, romantic, horrifying, and haunting. Whereas Citizen Kane was innovative, it lacked the emotional resonance of Vertigo. Vertigo needs to be higher on the list than Psycho, Rear Window, and North by Northwest.
