A variation on the prodigal son story set in beautiful 1920’s Montana.

Our favorite movies reach us on a personal level. A River Runs Through It reminded me of my brother when I saw it in its first release. It still does. Every time I watch it I cry. I know Brad Pitt will break my heart, but his character, Paul, is wrapped around me. The film is beautiful and tragic and not-quite-perfect, which is kind of how life is. There is so much to this movie…Robert Redford’s narration is just right, the cinematography deservedly won an Oscar and the story reminds us of a time when our our family were also our best friends. As an English teacher I adored Tom Skerritt’s advice for the writings of his son. Norman MacLean’s words strike to my core. As a would-be philosopher, great questions are asked: How is it that the ones closest to us, still elude us? These words will echo in my head forever.
