A British pilot parachutes out of his plane over England during WWII and lives to fall in love with an American WACS woman on the ground. It turns out he should have died and God sends an agent from heaven to bring him back, but love conquers all.

This movie is beautiful visually, the scenes on earth (the true paradise where love is found) are shot in brilliant color, while the majestic scenes of heaven are shot in black and white. The film also freezes whenever the main character, a British pilot, communicates with the agent sent from heaven in timeless space. David Niven is a true romantic soul and his love for the American girl convinces a court made up of both British and American elders that he should be allowed to stay on earth. The agent sent from God to bring him back to heaven is played by a delightful Frenchman, an aristocrat who had his head cut off during the Revolution. The film was made as an attempt to calm problems between Brits and Yanks during the war and Powell and Pressburger make a wonderful team.
